This is truly the most fashionable of the e-bikes we’ve assembled. For a hipster-stylized, commuter workhorse, the Faraday Porteur is hard to beat. It’s fairly inexpensive—for an e-bike—at $3,499, looks sleek and streamlined, and rides smoothly. Perhaps best of all, it doesn’t look like a traditional e-bike: Instead, it appears to be a singlespeed, although it features an internal eight-speed hub and a Gates belt drive for stealthy shifting. It’s an excellent commuter bike because it’s easy enough to pedal without the e-assist, but with it, you’ll zoom along without breaking a sweat. As a bonus, you can order this bike from the comfort of your own home on Faraday’s site, where you can customize the color and select accessories. If price is an issue, check out some of the more budget-friendly options like the Porteur S, which starts at $2,800.  We believe Electric Bicycles have a big part to play in America’s future recreation and transportation. Yet Americans bought as many electric bicycles as they did electric cars last year. About 53,000 electric bicycles were sold, according to Dave Hurst, an analyst with Navigant Research who tracks the industry. Electric car sales came in at 52,835.   Don’t just trust what a person that wants to sell you an e-bike says. There is no substitute for digging up the law in your own state to figure out if what you plan to buy, or have bought is legal for you to ride in your state. I bought a torque sensing pedelec just over a year ago and I find this system very intuitive. The harder you pedal the more (and proportional) assist you get. Good for accelerating away in traffic and you don’t have to do anything other than pedal. It is analogous to the power steering on a car but in this case the assist power is on the pedals. (*) Allowed on bike paths when electric systems are turned off (**) E-bikes are illegal in this region (***) Some regions have special regulations, see corresponding entry under Electric bicycle laws. E-bikes come in some pretty strange shapes and sizes these days. With a missing seat post, the BMX-inspired e-bike does have some points of difference, and also comes with an optional solar-powered charging pack so you can stay on the move without tapping into...

Riding Position: You also may wish to check out an e-bike’s riding position before investing in it. For short trips, the riding position might not make much difference, but for long journeys, the upright “Dutch” style with pulled-back handlebars is very comfortable – particularly for tall riders. The same goes for mountain bike styles, though these bikes are not often designed to actually go off-road. This all-black e-bike looks futuristic in design, from the handlebars to the Shimano Alfine drivetrain, and its tech is pretty far ahead, too. This Contro-E has Cannondale’s classic Lefty fork (a rigid one) and 2.35-inch Schwalbe tires hefty enough to do urban battle with potholes and the occasional shards of glass. Full front and rear fenders make it a rainy day machine, and a Bosch engine gives you a bit of boost when your morning coffee hasn’t yet kicked in during your commute.  This is the bike that started it all. We launched the company on the idea that we could improve an American classic. Choose from a completely designed Fashion or Attitude Cruiser, or one of the great colors of the Classic Cruiser, Cruiser Lux or Lux Fat Tire bike. Power assist bikes typically use an electric motor and on-board electric battery to add propulsion to the traditional pedal-and-chain system. The power can be turned on or off, and dialed low to high,...
