It can get really confusing, and very seldom does any one place you look have all the information you need. You need to get your information from official state websites or publications. Looking at the wiki for California, it contains a very obvious mistake. Lots of misinformation on sites that try to summarize the laws for you. Electric Hybrid Bikes- As the name suggests, these bikes combine the properties of mountain and fat-tire bikes. They are built to be fast and, at the same time, tough. They are lighter than electric mountain bikes, so you don’t have to deal with the excess weight when going up hills. You can use the bike to carry heavy luggage or cycle through rough trails. “There’s tremendous opportunity to get a generation of people for whom suffering isn’t their thing,” Cocalis said. “Ebike riders get the enjoyable part of cycling without the massive suffering of climbing huge hills.” How Rotten Tomatoes may have radically skewed the Oscars’ Best Picture race There are several other factors behind the shift to weirder, more personal nominees in the category, but the statistics are worth considering They Eliminate Much of the Heavy Lifting: Many e-bikes let you haul a load sweat-free. For example, Extracycles’ Bosch Electric Assist system helps you maintain an average speed of 15 mph, even when you’re bike is loaded with 400 pounds’ worth...

A moped is a two-wheeled or three-wheeled vehicle with an automatic transmission and a motor having a piston displacement of less than 50 cubic centimeters, that is capable of propelling the vehicle at a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles an hour on level ground, at sea level. Lastly look for any other codes that apply to operation of the type of vehicle you have. You may find that helmets are required for those under 18, or whatever.  Remember, if you have decided that your vehicle fits the definition of “bicycle” then ALL laws applying to bicycles apply to you.  So you might need a light after dark.  You might be required to have pedals (some builds have used a bicycle frame to essentially make a scooter). You may or may not be legal to ride on the sidewalk, or the hiking trail.  Looks pretty similar to the Texas definitions, but there is one key difference.  There is no definition for electric bike. There seems to be no such thing as an electric bike in New Mexico. The closest match is “moped” So it looks like in the State of New Mexico the example e-bike is a moped.  Some good news, you can go 30 mph. And you don’t need to register and insure a moped. After the initial thrill of going electric, you will quickly realize that e-bikes...

I bought an OutlawSS which tops out at 28mph. I tried the “discreet” route as stated above but because of the blood-red color and design of the bike I attracted too much attention. It didn’t matter that I was keeping my (alongside of the road) speed at 15mph, people (probably cycling enthusiasts or just haters) jammed on the brakes to check out wtf I was riding. One passenger (some teenager) even had his smartphone out and was either snapping pictures or getting video. Long story short, the officer that pulled me over said “no” to the bike and advised me to get an off-road sticker from the DNR and I’d be fine on ATV trails. He also said there have been numerous reports of “The guy on the illegal E-bike”. I was polite and got off with a warning. Haters gonna hate I guess. Government does have an interest the matter of someone running a stop sign. It does not matter if you are in a truck, car, or are riding a bicycle, you must obey traffic laws. In Texas you are required to use a headlight at night and have a rear reflector. I would change the law to require a rear light if I were in the Legislature. “We want our bike to be a sexy product, one that everyone will want,” says Daniel Del Aguila, a...

Electric bicycles are already popular in Europe and in China, which has more e-bikes than cars on its roads. Now, manufacturers are marketing e-bikes in the U.S., promoting them as a “green” alternative to driving. However, the only real change in the e-bike laws that I’ve found in WA is the addition of the seat requirement. I’ve had people tell me I just need a seat, and the law’s to prevent sitting on a bar, or standing only. CleanTechnica is the #1 cleantech-focused news & analysis website in the US & the world, focusing primarily on electric cars, solar energy, wind energy, & energy storage. It is part of Important Media — a network of 20 progressive blogs working to make the world a better, greener place. “Traditionally, people don’t use bikes for transportation,” says Larry Pizzi, the president of Currie Technologies, a leading e-bicyle manufacturer based in Simi Valley, California. “We’re trying to change a paradigm.” There are reasons to believe that the e-bicycle industry may be able to do just that. The top three e-bikes are the Gocycle GS, The Jetson Adventure, and the Propella E-Bike. All three e-bikes are very different. The Gocycle is futuristic and looks like someone in SoHo, NYC or in Silverlake, Los Angeles would ride it to a trendy shop. It does it in style, won’t force you to relearn how to...

An affordable full suspension trail bike with quiet, but powerful, mid-drive motor and integrated downtube battery pack, full-sized USB charging port on battery, adjustable top speed. Integrated LED headlight, backlit LCD display panel, and standard reflectors for urban riding, high-pressure tires…… Fat E-Trike from Sun and E-BikeKit™ at Interbike 2014 Fat bikes and electric bikes were all the rage this year at interbike in Las Vegas. It seemed almost every bike vendor at the show has at least one fat bike model in their booth this year. On top of the fats were the electric bikes. And I think it goes without saying that nobody wants to actually pedal a fat… I’ve had 3 throttle bikes and have been riding a pedelec for 2 weeks now, and so far, I liked the throttle. I’m basically a cyclist who likes to keep the pace up going up hills, so I used to ride unassisted a lot of the time, but that’s not really possible with the pedelec. It would be better if it had a 0 setting so you could still use the throttle override, but the only option is to switch the whole thing off. And I agree with Dan, it’s just another thing to go wrong, cost money and add weight. I’ll bet in my case it detracts from the range. Imagine if they told you that you...
