Lastly look for any other codes that apply to operation of the type of vehicle you have. You may find that helmets are required for those under 18, or whatever.  Remember, if you have decided that your vehicle fits the definition of “bicycle” then ALL laws applying to bicycles apply to you.  So you might need a light after dark.  You might be required to have pedals (some builds have used a bicycle frame to essentially make a scooter). You may or may not be legal to ride on the sidewalk, or the hiking trail. The Jetson Adventure was a very pleasant surprise because we really didn’t know what to expect. Instead, we found a light and fun mountain bike and had no problem flinging into corners with ease. The one caveat is that its battery is not removable, at least, not easily. It can be removed from the front light but would take some time to do so. It sports 21 gears, and although we would like to go faster, it is meant to climb hills. Overall, it’s a fun bike to ride, and one that is lightweight at a fair price. Installing an electric bike kit is easy to do, can be done in just an hour or so and can last for many years if done right initially. Deciding on the right electric bike conversion kit, the one...

Government does have an interest in the matter of someone running a stop sign. It does not matter if you are in a truck, car, or are riding a bicycle, you must obey traffic laws. In Texas you are required to use a headlight at night and have a rear reflector. I would change the law to require a rear light if I were in the Legislature. Section 406(a) VC refers to a moped or motorized bicycle as any two or three wheeled device having fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power, or having no pedals if powered solely by electrical energy, has an automatic transmission, and a motor which produces less than 2 gross brake horespower and is capable of the device at a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on level ground. Utility meets comfort in the new Townie® Commute Go! powered by the Bosch Performance System offering four levels of power support from Eco to Turbo mode. […] The unique innovation in the E-bikes lies in the pedal-assist that propels you along as you bring your foot down, a boost which can be reduced or increased to affect your effort when cycling. The e-bike so changes from a motorised...

This Saturday, Oct. 7, Tim Sway will showcase his “UpTriCycle” at the Greater Hartford Mini Maker Faire. Sway calls the UpTricycle an “off grid, electric, solar charging mobile maker space and carrier for upcycling makers.” He uses minimal tools and footprints in his creation for unlimited potential. On his YouTube page, Sway made a comparison video between a gas-powered trike and an electric trike. He purchased a gas-powered trike first,… In this chapter, it tells you how to operate the bicycle or in this case e-bicycle.  In most cases, there is little variation in this area from state to state.  All the usual stuff about having at least one hand on the handlebars, having a light at night, riding as far to the right as can be done safely, etc.  In nearly all states, it will clearly state that bikes obey traffic laws, such as speed limits, stop signs etc.  Just because you are allowed 20-MPH on the ebike you can’t ride though the 15-MPH school zone at 20-MPH.  You’d think this would be pretty obvious, but far too many bike riders think that no license required means no laws apply.  It’s not the case.  But it’s true that cops may ignore your breaking the law on a bicycle. Or…they may not.  Do you feel lucky? An e-bike conforming to these conditions is considered to be a pedelec in...

A recent report from the consulting firm eCycleElectric said that approximately 250,000 e-bikes were sold in America last year, representing 70% growth over 2015. Other estimates suggest the business could double again this year. Kvaern is launching the bike and solar power pack on Indiegogo later this week, and customers around the world will be able to buy the bike and the power pack together or separately. (Just know there’s no discount if you buy them together.) Kvaern plans to enter production soon in order to deliver the bike this summer and the power pack combo this fall. Lithium-ion polymer batteries have the same electrical properties as standard Li-ion batteries, but the material can be shaped more easily. There’s the potential for some interesting designs, though we’ve yet to see them. In the USA, it can get very confusing to understand what is legal and what is not, with an electric bicycle. Part of the confusion is caused by the Federal law, which has often been quoted by people selling electric bikes.  To begin with, this federal definition applies only to selling an e-bike.  As a retailer, it matters to your insurance company whether you are selling a “bike”, a “motorcycle”, or some vaguely defined toy. Our powerful mid-drive motor will help you conquer virtually any hill. We’ve located the motor in the middle of the frame, close to...
