In the theoretical electric bike we considered up above, we had the dynamo/motor driving the back wheel directly, simply by pressing on the tire. Most electric bikes work a different way. They have compact electric motors built into the hub of the back or front wheel (or mounted in the center of the bike and connected to the pedal sprocket). Take a look at the hub of an electric bike and probably you’ll see it’s much fatter and bulkier than on a normal bike. You can read more about how these motors work in our main article about hub motors.

The new Electric Bike Kit Owners group on Facebook has taken off within the first week of its creation. Around 400 people have joined the online group with new members being added every day. E-bike riders are sharing the various ways that they have converted their bikes using the E-BikeKit Complete Electric Bike Conversion System. Each one of the electric bike conversions is more unique than the next. Some e-bike…

Pedelecs are much like conventional bicycles in use and function — the electric motor only provides assistance, most notably when the rider would otherwise struggle against a headwind or be going uphill. Pedelecs are therefore especially useful for people living in hilly areas where riding a bike would prove too strenuous for many to consider taking up cycling as a daily means of transport. They are also useful when it would be helpful for the riders who more generally need some assistance, e.g. for elderly people.

Yes, They Still Count as Exercise: A new University of Colorado Boulder study says that regular e-bike usage has health benefits. Though they’re pedal assist, a e-bike can still give you a workout, improving your cardiovascular health, fitness, and aerobic capacity. The results were most prevalent in previously sedentary riders.

Budget Travel: Many e-bikes are cheaper to operate per mile than a car. According to e-bike manufacturer Elby’s calculations, the average annual cost of maintaining and operating a car is $9,283. Compare that to their calculated average annual cost of maintaining and operating an e-bike, which is just $390. The fuel’s cheaper, too: the cost of a 12-gallon gasoline fill-up is about $33.60 (12 gallons at $2.85/gallon). Cost to fully charge an e-bike, on the other hand, is about $0.50 (480 watt/hr battery at $0.10/kwh).

They’re Kind of a Bargain: E-bikes are less expensive than you might think—in fact, you can buy one new for under $1,000. (They vary greatly in technology, design and price, however, so be sure to read reviews and try a few models out in person before you hand over your credit card; it’s important to know what you’re getting—and not getting—for your money.)

This is the half grip twist throttle on the eFlow E3 Nitro electric bike.  The throttle is engaged by twisting the throttle; similar to a motorcycle or scooter.  This is the most common type of e-bike throttle.

This lightweight geared hub motor has a 5:1 gear reduction for increased torque. The freewheeling clutch allows the wheel to spin freely when the motor is not powered. The motor is set up with a high-end 9 Speed Shimano Cassette rather than the budget 7 speed freewheel systems. This insures more crisp gear shifts and even compatibility with 10 Speed setups

In 2012, two e-bike advocates completed the first 4,000-mile (6,400 km) transcontinental e-bike tour from New York to San Francisco to advocate for e-bikes in major cities across the U.S.[78] Pedego Electric Bikes is the best selling brand in the U.S. Many e-bikes in the United States are standard bicycles converted using a kit. In general, the kits include the motor (the majority of which are hub motors built into the front or rear wheel), a speed controller, throttle (usually twist-grip or thumb throttle), necessary wiring and connectors, and a battery. Several U.S. companies offer conversion kits which also offer advanced lithium battery packs. Major manufacturers also offer complete e-bikes. Trek offers a line of e-bikes using the Bionx system in which the rider programs the controller to determine how much effort the motor will give in response to rider effort, from 25% up to 200% of the rider’s power. This system ensures a minimum level of rider participation and is also used to comply with many European laws mandating partial human effort the motor engages.

Baby boomers are an obvious market for electric bicycles. “We’re seeing an aging population, and a growing number of people getting back into cycling,” says Bill Moore, an Internet publisher who recently launched ePEDALER, an electric-assist bicycle retailer. Urbanization will be another driver of electric bike sales, Moore said, as will the obesity crisis, rising health care costs, and the desires of employers to encourage their workers to become more active.

This Saturday, Oct. 7, Tim Sway will showcase his “UpTriCycle” at the Greater Hartford Mini Maker Faire. Sway calls the UpTricycle an “off grid, electric, solar charging mobile maker space and carrier for upcycling makers.” He uses minimal tools and footprints in his creation for unlimited potential. On his YouTube page, Sway made a comparison video between a gas-powered trike and an electric trike. He purchased a gas-powered trike first,…

Like electric cars, electric bikes are pricey. A basic e-bike can be had for as little as $499 on Amazon, but sturdy, well-designed models with better-quality batteries cost between $2,000 and $3,500. (Conventional bikes sell for an average of about $450 in speciality stores and about $100 in retailers like Walmart and Target where most bikes are sold.) Prices could come down as batteries and electric motors become more efficient, and economies of scale come into play. “The technology is getting better, rapidly,” says Dave Hurst of Navigant.

Torque is a consideration, but actual figures are rarely quoted by e-bike makers. Owners will frequently comment on whether their electric bike offers plenty of torque or lacks it, but these comments need to be taken in context. Road conditions, as well as the weight of the rider, have a big impact.

Over the years our lineup has grown, and as a result, the offering has become more complicated than it needs to be. Specifically, this year we introduced a 500w geared motor option to the lineup and that has created some redundancy. Before outlining changes, we would like to ensure everyone that we will be stocking enough inventory of previously sold parts for a long enough time to ensure all warranties…
