Some of the less expensive e-bikes used bulky lead acid batteries, whereas newer models generally used NiMH, NiCd, and/or Li-ion batteries, which offered lighter, denser capacity batteries. Performance varies; however, in general there is an increase in range and speed with the latter battery types.

I’ve had 3 throttle bikes and have been riding a pedelec for 2 weeks now, and so far, I liked the throttle. I’m basically a cyclist who likes to keep the pace up going up hills, so I used to ride unassisted a lot of the time, but that’s not really possible with the pedelec. It would be better if it had a 0 setting so you could still use the throttle override, but the only option is to switch the whole thing off. And I agree with Dan, it’s just another thing to go wrong, cost money and add weight. I’ll bet in my case it detracts from the range. Imagine if they told you that you couldn’t switch off cruise control in your car!

Electric bikes make commutes more inviting by easing worries about hills, headwinds, and fatigue. “They increase the distance that people can ride comfortably,” says Evelo’s Mordkovich. Commuters on e-bicycles are also less likely to arrive at the office dripping with sweat. “It seems like a small detail,” Mordkovich says, “but it’s a big deal to a lot of people.”
The two most common types of hub motors used in electric bicycles are brushed and brushless. There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. BLDC hub motors are a common modern design with the motor built into the wheel hub itself and the stator fixed solidly to the axle and the magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The bicycle wheel hub is the motor. The power levels of motors used are influenced by available legal categories and are often, but not always limited to under 750 watts.

For a lawyer, you didn’t get what the federal law states. The federal law overrides all state laws and defines an e-bike as a bicycle. According to the New Jersey state MVO, e-bikes must be registered but they can’t be registered because they do not meet federal safety standards for motor vehicles – not on the list of approved motorcycles. The federal law overrides these anal idiots. E-bikes that meet the federal definition of an e-bike, are bicycles in all states. This is the entire purpose of the federal law! To prevent anal bureaucracy states from stopping the sale and use of these environmentally friendly e-bikes.

A moped is a two or three wheeled motorized (electric or liquid fuel) device with a cylinder displacement not exceeding fifty cubic centimeters and produces not more than two gross brake horsepower. The device may not be capable of exceeding thirty miles per hour on level ground. Pedals and sixteen-inch or larger diameter wheels are not required, provided the device and all equipment was originally manufactured for public road use. Mopeds are required to have two mirrors, horn, brakes on all wheels, speedometer/odometer, head light, tail light, brake light, license plate light, turn signals (if originally equipped), license plate lamp, red reflector to the rear, and the operator and any passenger are required to wear a helmet meeting requirements outlined in RCW 46.37.350.
The time or distance an electric bike battery will run between chargings is impossible to judge with much accuracy. There are too many variables: terrain, speed, rider weight, bike load (shopping, kids, luggage), and more. However, we can make a few generalizations about an e-bike’s recharge time and overall working life. These generalizations should be used for comparison purposes only.
They’re Kind of a Bargain: E-bikes are less expensive than you might think—in fact, you can buy one new for under $1,000. (They vary greatly in technology, design and price, however, so be sure to read reviews and try a few models out in person before you hand over your credit card; it’s important to know what you’re getting—and not getting—for your money.)
Battery costs vary enormously. Cheap batteries are available, but you just don’t know what you’re getting. Our advice is to buy only those recommended by the manufacturer. You’ll likely pay between $300 and $500, but the good news is you’ll only be buying one every few years.
By 1898 a rear-wheel drive electric bicycle, which used a driving belt along the outside edge of the wheel, was patented by Mathew J. Steffens. Also, the 1899 U.S. Patent 627,066 by John Schnepf depicted a rear-wheel friction “roller-wheel” style drive electric bicycle. Schnepf’s invention was later re-examined and expanded in 1969 by G.A. Wood Jr. with his U.S. Patent 3,431,994. Wood’s device used 4 fractional horsepower motors; connected through a series of gears.
Interestingly, it appears that if I wanted to, I could also ride it as a moped. In the example, 36V makes it go 23-MPH. With 48V, it would go about 28-MPH, and have about one and a half horsepower. As a moped, note that it does not require the bike to have pedals. As a motorized bicycle, it IS required to have fully operable pedals.
Chart: Electric bicycles are rapidly becoming popular. This chart shows the growth in sales of what the manufacturers refer to as “electric power-assisted cycles (EPACs)” in European countries over the last decade. Over 1.6 million electric bikes were sold in Europe in 2016 alone, which is about 7 percent of total European bicycle sales. What this chart doesn’t reveal is that the bikes are much more popular in some countries than others: four countries accounted for 70 percent of all the sales (Germany, 36 percent; the Netherlands, 16 percent; Belgium, 10 percent; and France 8 percent).
