Then there are the dedicated off-road e-bikes. These bikes push the boundaries of what’s possible, and the combination of materials and technologies doesn’t come cheap. You’ll pay a minimum of $3,500 for an off-road e-bike. During the course of our research, we found one for as much as $36,000.

We’ve seen a number of kits that allow cyclists to temporarily turn their existing bike into an e-bike, by swapping one of its wheels with an electrified one. It’s a pretty simple system, although the Swytch eBike Conversion Kit may be even simpler and easier yet.​

By 1898 a rear-wheel drive electric bicycle, which used a driving belt along the outside edge of the wheel, was patented by Mathew J. Steffens. Also, the 1899 U.S. Patent 627,066 by John Schnepf depicted a rear-wheel friction “roller-wheel” style drive electric bicycle.[7] Schnepf’s invention was later re-examined and expanded in 1969 by G.A. Wood Jr. with his U.S. Patent 3,431,994. Wood’s device used 4 fractional horsepower motors; connected through a series of gears.[8]

As a power electronics engineer I had intended designing and developing a torque assist bike so was surprised to find that a few manufacturers brought them out in Europe recently. I bought a Raleigh Vélo Cité with a 36V 10Ahr lithium battery. I would never use a throttle or cadence type unless I was infirm and I am sure that torque sensing pedelecs will become the norm as prices fall.

 What is it?   Back to the definitions, since it is not an electric bike, it CAN be a motor driven cycle.  So it is a Moped, and a moped IS a motor vehicle.  If I look up the requirements for mopeds in other statutes, I may find my homemade moped will not be legal without lights, turn signals, dot approved tires, valid drivers license needed, etc etc etc.  If that is so I’m screwed!  ARRRGHHH!

The term “pedelec” (from pedal electric cycle) refers to an e-bike where the pedal-assist electric drive system is limited to a decent but not excessive top speed, and where its motor is relatively low-powered. Pedelecs are legally classed as bicycles rather than low-powered motorcycles or mopeds.
