The e-JOE Epik’s thumb throttle is not the most intuitive (it’s a bit like some powered lawn mowers), but you soon get used to it. The handlebar-mounted display could be easier to understand. These minor negatives aside, owners love the e-JOE Epik’s practicality and reliability. It delivers precisely what you expect from a folding electric bicycle.
Electric bikes are a green alternative to driving a vehicle. Studies carried out in several towns and cities show that the average car speed in rush hour traffic can dip as low as 18 to 20 mph. Electric bike speed can be as high as 15 mph. With an electric bike, you can reduce pollution, improve fitness, and still arrive at the same time as your car-bound colleagues.
One last thing to consider is your very local laws. Counties, Parishes, Towns, Cities and even park managers, can also regulate bikes, e-bikes, mopeds, etc at the local level. You may have local laws about mopeds or motor vehicles on the, hiking, bike or multi-use trails for example. Pay particular attention to the exact wording of the signs if any. “No Motor Vehicles”, does not ban an e-bike IF, your state does not define an e-bike as a motor vehicle. If a sign says “No Motorized Vehicles”, then your e-bike is a lot more likely to fit that definition and not be allowed on the trail. Local differences exist. Your multi-use beach path at home may be OK, but cross a city border, and some entirely different rules may be in effect for the paths.
Your best approach is to go directly to your states motor vehicle department website, and get a copy of the your local state vehicle codes, with NO EDITING. Only a recently updated official state vehicle codes will contain all the latest changes to the laws. Other websites may have edited versions of the state codes, which may not contain the sections that apply to e-bikes. Or the version may simply be out of date. Even at the official state websites, you might not be getting all the information at once. Various laws that apply to your e-bike are usually scattered in different sections of the code.
In most jurisdictions, the bikes are limited to 20 mph. Many can be ridden up to 50 miles before running out of electricity and can be recharged in two to four hours. In price, they run from several hundred dollars to many thousands.

The top three e-bikes are the Gocycle GS, The Jetson Adventure, and the Propella E-Bike. All three e-bikes are very different. The Gocycle is futuristic and looks like someone in SoHo, NYC or in Silverlake, Los Angeles would ride it to a trendy shop. It does it in style, won’t force you to relearn how to ride a bike, and certainly has a unique look going for it.
The Propella E-Bike is an e-bike we haven’t written much about yet but are currently testing it for CleanTechnica. This is one very sweet e-bike. What makes it really stand out is that it doesn’t feel like an e-bike. Most e-bikes feel like electric bicycles. The Propella feels like a normal bicycle that just happens to have an electric motor. It’s not in your face and it’s a very sleek and light bike. Stay tuned for more on that bike. Oh, and the price? $1,200. Not bad for an entry-level e-bike that will make you feel you are riding on a well designed, well-executed bicycle.
E-bikes come in some pretty strange shapes and sizes these days. With a missing seat post, the BMX-inspired e-bike does have some points of difference, and also comes with an solar-powered charging pack so you can stay on the move without tapping into the grid.
I like having both options. The throttle is great for getting a quick burst of speed, like when going through an intersection. It is also good when you are riding in a situation that requires you to be able to vary your speed quickly. I like the pedal-assist when riding on open stretches of road. On my Pedego Interceptor I can change the pedal-assist mode very easily so if I need to drop down from Super Girl #5 to Modest Mouse #2 I can do that quickly.

The environmental effects involved in recharging the batteries can of course be reduced. The small size of the battery pack on an e-bike, relative to the larger pack used in an electric car, makes them very good candidates for charging via solar power or other renewable energy resources. Sanyo capitalized on this benefit when it set up “solar parking lots,” in which e-bike riders can charge their vehicles while parked under photovoltaic panels.
Looks pretty similar to the Texas definitions, but there is one key difference. There is no definition for electric bike. There seems to be no such thing as an electric bike in New Mexico.
