E-bikes can be a useful part of cardiac rehabilitation programmes, since health professionals will often recommend a stationary bike be used in the early stages of these. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programmes can reduce deaths in people with coronary heart disease by around 27%;[56] and a patient may feel safer progressing from stationary bikes to e-bikes.[57] They require less cardiac exertion for those who have experienced heart problems.[58]

PikeResearch, a for-profit market research firm, released a report in 2010 which included market analysis and forecasts for electric two-wheel vehicles. They concluded that, “The worldwide electric two-wheel vehicle market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9% through 2016” and that “a lack of a well-defined retail channel hampers faster adoption in North America and Europe.”[34] PikeResearch also forecasted that worldwide sales of e-bikes, e-motorcycles, and e-scooters will reach more than 466 million between 2010 and 2016, and China will continue to dominate the world market, with more than 95% of sales during this period. E-bikes sales are expected to have the largest share with 56% of the market.[35]

The first pedal-assisted bicycles appeared in India in 1993. In 2008, the sales of e-bike sales exceeded moped sales. In recent years, 2-passenger and even 3-passenger (two adults and a child) e-bikes were introduced in India.[73]

They would get me with an Ego drive, (plan to get one) it’s a little noisy. Wonder if dropping gear or reducing motor use, while clown pedaling would get me by. Even if it doesn’t still going to try! All hub motor systems seem good and stealthy, many fully legal, but ego kit so far seems the most bang for buck. At least from what I want out of my kit, what I willing to spend.

Power-assist: Also known as pedal-assist bikes, these are the bicycle equivalents of hybrid cars: they’re designed to be pedaled quite a lot of the time and electrically powered either when you’re tired or when you feel like a bit of electric help (when you’re going up hill, for example). Unlike full-power bikes, they don’t have hub motors; instead, there’s a separate electric motor mounted near the rear wheel and driving it either through the gear sprocket or simply by pressing against the rear tire. Where a hub motor is difficult or impossible to pedal without any power (because you’re effectively turning it into a generator), power-assist motors turn easily with little or no resistance when you pedal. That gives power-assist bikes much greater range than hub-motor ones (as much as 80–145km or 50–90 miles).

In full-electric mode, the Pedego City Commuter Classic Electric Bike is capable of moving at up to 20 mph for anywhere from 15 to 30 miles. There are two further options: power-assisted pedaling or fully “unplugged” riding. Renowned Shimano gears are easy to select. Seldom do we come across a product so universally praised by owners. It’s not cheap, but comments like “Everything I hoped for!” and “Outstanding!” tell us that it’s money well spent.

Then there are the dedicated off-road e-bikes. These bikes push the boundaries of what’s possible, and the combination of materials and technologies doesn’t come cheap. You’ll pay a minimum of $3,500 for an off-road e-bike. During the course of our research, we found one for as much as $36,000.

 In two states, California and New Mexico allow riding as “moped” class. The moped class in both states allows 30-MPH. Both require a drivers license but only California required a motorcycle endorsement for the license.  California required a registration, New Mexico does not.

Continue reading subsection D. It only applies to state laws that are “more stringent than the Federal law or requirements referred to in subsection A” — then go back to subsection A and see if it says anything at all about the operation of e-bikes. It does not. It only refers to 16 CFR 1500.18 – (“Banned toys and other banned articles intended for use by children.”) and 16 CFR Part 1512 (“REQUIREMENTS FOR BICYCLES”), which has such thrilling subsections as “Bicycle Front Fork Cantilever Bending Test Rig” and “Toe Clearance and Chain Guard Requirements” but says absolutely nothing about what types of roads or paths e-bikes are allowed to be operated upon, etc.

Although there are plenty of other e-bikes that impressed us, we wanted to choose three that stand out for a few reasons. But before we continue, an honorable mention goes to the Copenhagen Wheel. If you’re not sure where to start, the Copenhagen Wheel can fit on most bikes and can even be ordered fully installed on a few bikes. More to come on that.

The Eurpopeans have it right. Pedelecs are the way to go. I have a Kalkoff. I find it so effortless to pedal that I only need to use the Eco assist level. The only time I use the standard or high assist levels are when climbing 8-10 degree hills. Because pedaling with assist is so effortless, having a throttle is redundant.

If you must register it, chances are you may need to have a drivers license to operate it on the public roadways.  So look in those sections of your vehicle codes to see what kind of license you need if any.  Look up the definition of public road too.  It could matter.

Say you’re a responsible 20 mph max rider using proper power, but someone idiot car driver opens their door and you have no time to avoid the whack! You don’t have a helmet on (which is the law in Calif. using power assist). On a regular bike the idiot car driver would be liable for your injuries. Since you weren’t wearing a helmet their insurance rep could argue court you were negligent and broke the law…hence your brain injury was YOUR fault, not the car driver. Same would happen if they discover you monkeyed with the max. speed sensor…or the max power level.

The part that confuses me is the “saddle”. Recumbent trikes do not have the typical bicycle saddle seat. They have a nice comfy fully supportive seat. Some are like bucket seats. So then I’m thinking, would it be a moped under WA law?

Electric bicycle (e-bike) laws are different in every state, and can be confusing for consumers, retailers, and suppliers. The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association and PeopleForBikes have a partnership to make riding an e-bike easy and accessible for all.

The last e-bike component we’re going to discuss is the throttle. A few e-bikes use levers much like you’d find on some lawn mowers. Some just have a button, but most use motorcycle-style twist grips. These give a positive feel and more precise control.
