Interestingly, it appears that if I wanted to, I could also ride it as a moped. In the example, 36V makes it go 23-MPH. With 48V, it would go about 28-MPH, and have about one and a half horsepower. As a moped, note that it does not require the bike to have pedals. As a motorized bicycle, it IS required to have fully operable pedals.
With pedal-assist the electric motor is regulated by pedalling. The pedal-assist augments the efforts of the rider when they are pedalling. These e-bikes – called pedelecs – have a sensor to detect the pedalling speed, the pedalling force, or both. Brake activation is sensed to disable the motor as well.
Although there are plenty of other e-bikes that impressed us, we wanted to choose three that stand out for a few reasons. But before we continue, an honorable mention goes to the Copenhagen Wheel. As is always is the case with companies that launch products on Indiegogo, there’s a chance those things never happen. But if you’re in love with the idea and don’t particularly want to roll the dice on a startup, there are plenty of similarly priced portable batteries and solar panels already available on the market, and an abundance of e-bikes at or under Kvaern’s price tag. You might have to do a little comparison shopping if you want to find something that matches the Copenhagen startup’s style, but you’ll certainly be able to ride the sun’s rays a lot sooner.
Think I care if I push laws boundries? Nope, I will suffer the consequences if they catch me having fun. The law can’t keep up with the times, we can build bikes faster than they can ‘debate’. In terms of how far you can go, there’s a big difference between a pedelec (pedal-assisted electric bike) and full-time electric bike. If you’re prepared to pedal and only need help on hills, you could get anywhere from 50 to 100 miles on a single charge with the former.
Size: Some electric bikes look a little small, but if you’re going to drive to the edge of the city and ride the last couple of miles, a light, folding model that you can easily throw in the trunk has definite advantages.

A recent report from the consulting firm eCycleElectric said that approximately 250,000 e-bikes were sold in America last year, representing 70% growth over Other estimates suggest the business could double again this year.
In all examples I will apply the statutes to a “typical e-bike hubmotor kit”. The example will be a direct drive hubmotor, 20 amps 36V controller, and 36V battery. The kit is then installed on a typical bicycle, with two rim brakes , seat, and multi-speed shifter. Upon assembly and testing, the bike is capable of traveling 23-MPH on flat ground with no pedaling. The rider is an adult male, and weighs 180 pounds.
Now I will dig through some examples of state motor vehicle codes, to give an example of how to find and possibly understand the statutes, short of hiring a lawyer. In the examples, I give only my personal opinion of what the statutes mean.

For a lawyer, you didn’t get what the federal law states. The federal law overrides all state laws and defines an e-bike as a bicycle. According to the New Jersey state MVO, e-bikes must be registered but they can’t be registered because they do not meet federal safety standards for motor vehicles – not on the list of approved motorcycles. The federal law overrides these anal idiots. E-bikes that meet the federal definition of an e-bike, are bicycles in all states. This is the entire purpose of the federal law! To prevent anal bureaucracy states from stopping the sale and use of these environmentally friendly e-bikes.
This all-black e-bike looks futuristic in design, from the handlebars to the Shimano Alfine drivetrain, and its tech is pretty far ahead, too. This Contro-E has Cannondale’s classic Lefty fork (a rigid one) and 2.35-inch Schwalbe tires hefty enough to do urban battle with potholes and the occasional shards of glass. Full front and rear fenders make it a rainy day machine, and a Bosch engine gives you a bit of boost when your morning coffee hasn’t yet kicked in during your commute.
Folding Electric Bikes- These are mostly used when people need to combine different modes of transport. For example, if you need first to take the train or bus, a folding e-bike can be useful to carry along. Also, very short trips are more convenient with these electric bikes since you don’t need to bother tying them up. Typically, these are very light, even with the motor and battery.
While the electric assist will ensure that you get up that hill, an E-bike does not make up for the need to be a practiced and comfortable rider. Operators of E-bikes must be capable of and comfortable with all of the usual aspects of bike operation including mounting/dismounting, starting/stopping, pedaling, shifting gears, balancing and maneuvering in varying traffic and road conditions.

Does any of this matter? That’s a valid question. Where I ride, the cops sure do ignore me. If your local cops don’t care, why should you? I can’t say if you should care or not, but I can say you should at least know if you are legal or illegal. You should not ride any different either way, but it’s always good to know where you stand.
If the individual is under 21 years of age, mandatory successful completion of a Basic Rider education course approved by the CHP is required, such as the Basic Rider course available through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program.
Some electric bikes claim to use a neat trick called regenerative braking. If you start pedaling the bicycle or going downhill, the spinning wheels turn the electric motor in the hub in reverse and start charging up the batteries. In practice, regenerative braking is nowhere near as useful on an electric bicycle as it is on an electric train or car. An electric bike has much less mass and velocity than either a train or car, so it never gains (or loses) anything like as much kinetic energy when it starts and stops. You’d have to go down an awful lot of hills to charge up the batteries completely and that’s usually not practical. And what’s the point in pedaling the wheels simply to charge the battery? You might as well have bought an ordinary bicycle to start with!
