For some, only the best will do. The next generation of e-bike battery packs is now here with a massive 52 Volts. This higher voltage pack adds more speed and more torque than you ever thought possible from the geared hub motor. The RipCurrent S is the first production fat bike to fully take advantage of the new 52V standard.
The powerful 750 Watt geared hub motor provides the highest street-legal power allowed for e-bikes on the USA market. Combined with our 48V or 52V Volt battery packs, the RipCurrent S has both low end torque and high-end speed.
I wasn’t sure I would be able to do this ride. But I had no problem at all. I used an e-bike and kept up with the group and had a ball! Everyone on the ride was wonderful and fun to be with. If you aren’t sure you might be up for a ride through Spain, think again. Anyone can do it using an e-bike. I can’t wait to do my next trip!! Hum, where shall I go?
Photo: This typical electric bicycle, a Sanyo Eneloop (now discontinued), had a range of about 30–55 km (17–35 miles) and a top speed of around 24 km/h (15 mph). Note the 250-watt hub motor on the front wheel and the 5.7Ah lithium-ion battery pack (black, marked “Sanyo,” just in front of the back wheel). This is truly the most fashionable of the e-bikes we’ve assembled. For a hipster-stylized, commuter workhorse, the Faraday Porteur is hard to beat. It’s fairly inexpensive—for an e-bike—at $3,499, looks sleek and streamlined, and rides smoothly. Perhaps best of all, it doesn’t look like a traditional e-bike: Instead, it appears to be a singlespeed, although it features an internal eight-speed hub and a Gates belt drive for stealthy shifting. It’s an excellent commuter bike because it’s easy enough to pedal without the e-assist, but with it, you’ll zoom along without breaking a sweat. As a bonus, you can order this bike from the comfort of your own home on Faraday’s site, where you can customize the color and select accessories. If price is an issue, check out some of the more budget-friendly options like the Porteur S, which starts at $2,800.
In 2012, two e-bike advocates completed the first 4,000-mile (6,400 km) transcontinental e-bike tour from New York to San Francisco to advocate for e-bikes in major cities across the U.S. Pedego Electric Bikes is the best selling brand in the U.S. Many e-bikes in the United States are standard bicycles converted using a kit. In general, the kits include the motor (the majority of which are hub motors built into the front or rear wheel), a speed controller, throttle (usually twist-grip or thumb throttle), necessary wiring and connectors, and a battery. Several U.S. companies offer conversion kits which also offer advanced lithium battery packs. Major manufacturers also offer complete e-bikes. Trek offers a line of e-bikes using the Bionx system in which the rider programs the controller to determine how much effort the motor will give in response to rider effort, from 25% up to 200% of the rider’s power. This system ensures a minimum level of rider participation and is also used to comply with many European laws mandating partial human effort before the motor engages.
In this chapter, it tells you how to operate the bicycle or in this case e-bicycle. In most cases, there is little variation in this area from state to state. All the usual stuff about having at least one hand on the handlebars, having a light at night, riding as far to the right as can be done safely, etc. In nearly all states, it will clearly state that bikes obey traffic laws, such as speed limits, stop signs etc. Just because you are allowed 20-MPH on the ebike you can’t ride though the 15-MPH school zone at 20-MPH. You’d think this would be pretty obvious, but far too many bike riders think that no license required means no laws apply. It’s not the case. But it’s true that cops may ignore your breaking the law on a bicycle. Or…they may not. Do you feel lucky?
In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead, student survivors have started a movement for greater gun control. It’s what’s inside your motor that sets it apart from the rest. Quality parts and assembly We’ve written here before about how to choose a motor, the different types of motors, the performance differences between motors, etc. But today I want to show you what makes our motors different from other hub motors. Today, harry is replacing the axle on a customer’s direct-drive motor. The bike was crashed and the…
We’ve seen a number of kits that allow cyclists to temporarily turn their existing bike into an e-bike, by swapping one of its wheels with an electrified one. It’s a pretty simple system, although the Swytch eBike Conversion Kit may be even simpler and easier yet.
Unlike drivers of electric cars who are plagued by “range anxiety,” electric bike owners don’t have to worry about running out of electricity: They can travel under their own power, assuming they’ve got the energy to pedal a bike that weighs 45 to 60 pounds. Batteries typically deliver 20 to 40 miles of assisted riding, and they can be recharged in a few hours in ordinary power outlets.
Start with definitions, and look for definitions of various things. Bicycle, Scooter, Motorcycle, Moped, Bicycle with helper motor, Motor driven cycle, those kinds of things. Figure out which one describes your e-bike best.

Pedelecs are pointless. Most people who buy electric bikes want to cruise on electric and pedal just a little. Plus you can keep up with traffic better with throttle and more speed. Its actually dafer for you. Some pedelecs you never know when the darn motor will kick in. The pedelec sensor fails often. Its a nightmare for ebike companies to fix!
If you’re going for a full-time electric bike, the distance you travel on a single charge will be reduced considerably, though it’s difficult to offer precise figures. Manufacturers will quote anywhere from 20 to 40 miles while simultaneously using phrases like “in ideal conditions.”
If you live in an apartment or small house that’s short on space, consider the Kalkhoff, which is one of the lightest and most compact e-bikes on the market, thanks to folding pedals and swiveling handlebars. That makes it easy to store it flush with the wall in a hallway or on the train, and an internally-geared eight-speed hub makes it cleaner than your average bike. It’s also easily adjustable and one-size-fits-all thanks to handlebars and an extra long seat post that both adjust in a snap. It comes with a two-year warranty, which helps justify the expense of a new bike. Motor speeds top out at 20 miles per hour, and it lasts for a long time—up to 85 miles! At 50 pounds, it’s one of the lightest models available; making it more reasonable to pedal on its own if the battery wears out mid-ride.
Please ride like a normal bike rider, not like a hooligan. Even if you left your hooligan days behind you 30 years ago, you never know, you could get into an accident. Or, your town might have one cop who just hates bicycle riders. My town had one that lived for just one thing, ticketing bicycles going faster than 15 mph or passing a car in a school zone. You might not be able to talk yourself out of a ticket, but it sure helps to have some idea if you are really legal or not.
The environmental credentials of e-bikes, and electric / human powered hybrids generally, have led some municipal authorities to use them, such as Little Rock, Arkansas with their Wavecrest electric power-assisted bicycles or Cloverdale, California police with Zap e-bikes. China’s e-bike manufacturers, such as Xinri, are now partnering with universities in a bid to improve their technology in line with international environmental standards, backed by the Chinese government who is keen to improve the export potential of the Chinese manufactured e-bikes.
Is my e-bike a moped? Lets see. The bike has a 20 amps controller, and 36V battery. 20 amps X 36volts = 720 watts. One horsepower is about 750 watts. The drive system doesn’t require me to shift. But wait a minute, the law says “if an internal combustion engine” so that doesn’t about the shifting. Apparently the law understands that other types of motors such as electric don’t have transmissions. Suppose my electric motor did drive the chain of the bike, and required shifting. Doesn’t matter, it’s still not an internal combustion engine.
“The U.S. electric bicycle market is growing, and we see an opportunity for Yamaha to enter with our long history of power assist bicycle innovation,” said Rob Trester, a business development executive with the company. “Yamaha has been studying the market closely, and we see a strong growth trend.”
