S-Pedelecs: have pedal-assist only, motor power can be greater than 250 watts, can attain a higher speed (e.g., 45 km/h) before motor stops assisting, legally classed as a moped or motorcycle (not a bicycle)

An Electric Boost for Bicyclists by J. David Goodman. The New York Times, January 31, 2010. There are over 120 million electric bicycles in China, and now Chinese makers have got behind the technology, they are driving growth in other world markets.

Introducing the future of performance and comfort, the Kinekt BodyFloat seatpost. The innovation isolation system, designed here in Washington, greatly enhances the endurance and enjoyment of riding a bike. Engineered to be infinitely tunable to fit your personal riding style and weight, Seattle Electric Bike is proud to offer this breakthrough seatpost for all your biking adventures.

Though rear-wheel versions are available, most e-bike conversion kits are for the front wheel. They are easier to fit. However, they do change the balance of the bike, and brakes should also be uprated to cope with the additional weight. We’re not aware of any front hub motors on purpose-built electric bikes.

You ARE allowed to ride an e-bike in Texas faster than 20-MPH if you pedal up that speed.  So when you are going fast and see a cop, pedal as fast as you can.  We call it clown pedaling. Looks really clownish if you happen to be going 40-MPH. Don’t expect a cop to be fooled if your e-bike really goes 40-MPH…but sometimes cops can surprise you.

The frame of an electric bike also has to be slightly different. The main part of the frame (the bit that supports your weight) is usually made from lightweight aluminum alloy: the lighter the frame, the lighter the weight of the bike overall, and the further it can travel before you need to recharge the batteries. The spokes on the wheel also have to be stronger than the thin spokes on a traditional bicycle. That’s because the electric motor in the hub spins the wheel with a lot of turning force (known as torque) and, if the spokes were ordinary lightweight ones, they could bend or buckle.

In a friction drive motor, a small, solid wheel rotates against the side of the tire in order to drive it. The first motorcycles used the same concept, with a motor mounted above the front wheel. The problem is that the drive rubs at the side of the tire. It’s inefficient, and it quickly wears the sidewall away. Tires need to be replaced every couple hundred miles. For this reason, you’ll seldom see electric bikes with this type of drive anymore.

Visually, the Pedego City Commuter Classic Electric Bike is stunning – a smart blend of yesteryear’s style and today’s technology. Pleasantly high handlebars, a sprung seat, and lovely Schwalbe Fat Frank tires make it very comfortable. Stopping is taken care of by powerful disk brakes, front and rear. Lights are included, as is a useful cargo rack. From an e-bike standpoint, the Pedego Classic City Commuter sports a reliable, hub-mounted motor driven by a 36-volt, 10-amp battery. There’s a digital display with a trip computer, odometer, speedometer, pedal assist level, and battery charge information.

The first three are, of course, electric cars. They benefit from a lot of media attention and generous government subsidies, including a $7,500 tax credit for buyers in the United States. The latter are electric bicycles, and they attract neither.

Fat-tire bikes with powerful electric assist are a match made in heaven. Juiced Bikes says it’s pulled out all the stops to make its upcoming RipCurrent S “the ultimate fat tire commuter e-bike,” and for the price, it looks like the team has pulled off something pretty special.

Electric bikes are a green alternative to driving a vehicle. Studies carried out in several towns and cities show that the average car speed in rush hour traffic can dip as low as 18 to 20 mph. Electric bike speed can be as high as 15 mph. With an electric bike, you can reduce pollution, improve fitness, and still arrive at the same time as your car-bound colleagues.

[…] e-bikes started appearing and so the NYPD treated any e-bike as illegal regardless if it was a pedal-assist or throttle e-bike. In recent years, the NYPD has been largely ignoring pedal-assist e-bikes while targeting […]

In all examples I will apply the statutes to a “typical e-bike hubmotor kit”.  The example will be a direct drive hubmotor, 20 amps 36V controller, and 36V battery.  The kit is then installed on a typical bicycle, with two rim brakes , seat, and multi-speed shifter. Upon assembly and testing, the bike is capable of traveling 23-MPH on flat ground with no pedaling. The rider is an adult male, and  weighs 180 pounds.

Pedelecs are pointless. Most people who buy electric bikes want to cruise on electric and pedal just a little. Plus you can keep up with traffic better with throttle and more speed. Its actually dafer for you. Some pedelecs you never know when the darn motor will kick in. The pedelec sensor fails often. Its a nightmare for ebike companies to fix!

Despite these legal complications, the classification of e-bikes is mainly decided by whether the e-bike’s motor assists the rider using a pedal-assist system or by a power-on-demand one. Definitions of these are as follows:

Rear hub motors are also popular. Some owners suggest they make the back of the bike feel a bit heavy (the battery is often back there, too), but balance is still good. In many ways, this is rear-wheel drive like you get with a scooter or motorbike. The rear hub looks larger than usual, but in profile, it looks much like an ordinary bike.

No matter your size and age, there’s an e-bike right for you! Join in on the fun and see for yourself why e-bikes are the wave of the future. Here at Crazy Lenny’s E-Bikes, you don’t have to buy one, just try one….

I use my pedelec mode all the time to save on battery charge. The throttle is good starting off then I switch to pedelec assist level 3. Also my hand gets sore holding the throttle on all the time. I prefer full throttles to half throttles, but my bike only comes with half throttle. A problem with my pedelec mode is the motor stays on for 2 to 3 seconds after I stop pedaling. I would be better if it cut off soon as I stop pedaling.

Electric Mountain Bikes- Just like traditional mountain bikes, these are meant to be ridden on rough and hilly terrains. They are more powerful than city e-bikes, and this enables the bikes to go over rocks and other obstacles on the trail safely.

If somebody in another state from yours tells you the bike he wants to sell you is legal for you to ride, it’s not very likely he knows all the statutes that apply in every state.  Get your own information from official state websites before you start shopping.  That way, you will know what rules apply before you buy a bike that is not a “bike” in your state.  Pay particular attention to your e-bikes local status as a “motor vehicle”  “motorized vehicle” or “biclcyle”.  It will make a great deal of difference which one you are when it comes to using multi use trails and paths.

There was an explosion of electric bicycles (e-bikes) in 2017, and we can safely bet 2018 will give us even more, to choose from. The real question is, will anyone break the quality entry-level barrier? We think we found one.

Lithium manganese batteries are used in the latest Nissan Leaf electric car. It’s claimed they generate more power and last longer. The new Leaf has double the range of its predecessor, but we’ve seen these batteries in very few (and very expensive) e-bikes so far.

If you choose an E-bike (which is heavier than a non-assist version), you will have it for the entire trip. If you are used to riding a higher-performance lightweight bike, you may prefer to choose such a bike and take advantage of our on-tour van transport for the uphill stretches.

Power : 240W. Our electric bicycle kit includes everything needed to convert your standard bike into a top-of-the-line performance electric bike. Drive system has no moving chains or gears, no friction, which will be less chance to break and it can serve you for a long time.

Buying an electric bike online is a big decision. We understand that, and so every EVELO comes with a 10-day trial period. Take it for a ride around the block or up that hill and if you don’t absolutely love it, we’ll take it back or exchange it for another. We’ll even cover the return shipping costs, and there are no hidden fees.

I am a fan of as little components as possible. The less parts and pieces, the less chance of failure. That’s just my opinion. I do not offer pedal sensor components on my DIY kits but I am open to learning what people think / want.

Folding Electric Bikes- These are mostly used when people need to combine different modes of transport. For example, if you need first to take the train or bus, a folding e-bike can be useful to carry along. Also, very short trips are more convenient with these electric bikes since you don’t need to bother tying them up. Typically, these are very light, even with the motor and battery.
