I’m a fan of pedal assist with a torque sensor (on high). It definitely gives the “super man” feel and allows for a great commute to work! I also like eBikes that allow for throttle override of the pedal assist while in pedal assist mode. Sometimes that extra boost up a hill is really helpful without having to switch modes to get it.
If you’re sharing an e-bike in one household—for running errands or just for fun—the Elby Bike is a great fit, since it’s the only one-size-fits-all e-bike on the market, and its step-through design is claimed to be great for people from five feet to six-and-a-half feet tall. It’s not the snazziest-looking bike (though it’s available in a few different colors), but the robot-style accoutrements make up for the less-than-exciting exterior. A high intensity Super Nova lighting system provides outstanding visibility from the front and back of the bike, while a built-in rear carrier with an integrated fender handles most panniers or saddle bags and loads up to 40 pounds. And the Elby App is a great bonus; it can be used with iOS devices for additional functionality and control, including navigation and even phone charging.

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that as people get older, their sense of balance diminishes. This means that seniors have a higher than average risk of falling when cycling. They may be less likely to do so, however, if the senior-specific Sofie e-bike reaches production.
In a friction drive motor, a small, solid wheel rotates against the side of the tire in order to drive it. The first motorcycles used the same concept, with a motor mounted above the front wheel. The problem is that the drive rubs at the side of the tire. It’s inefficient, and it quickly wears the sidewall away. Tires need to be replaced every couple hundred miles. For this reason, you’ll seldom see electric bikes with this type of drive anymore.
Another type of electric assist motor, often referred to as the mid-drive system, is increasing in popularity. With this system, the electric motor is not built into the wheel but is usually mounted near (often under) the bottom bracket shell. In more typical configurations, a cog or wheel on the motor drives a belt or chain that engages with a pulley or sprocket fixed to one of the arms of the bicycle’s crankset. Thus the propulsion is provided at the pedals rather than at the wheel, being eventually applied to the wheel via the bicycle’s standard drive train. An electric mid-drive combined with a hub gear at the back hub may require care due to the lack of a clutch mechanism to soften the shock to the gears at the moment of re-engagement. A stepless / coninuous ratio gear hub or a fully automatic gear hub may reduce the chocks due to the viscosity of oils used for liquid coupling instead of the mechanical couplings of the conventional gear hubs.

The Gocycle GS was hotly anticipated as a more affordable version of the G3. The GS is not a tuned down version of the G3. It has mostly the same specs as the G3. We like what Gocycle did with this e-bike. It does away with some of the futuristic features of the G3. We still feel the Gocycle is the bike of the future. It folds, it’s magnesium for light weight, and it was the first bike that didn’t make us dread an empty battery. We simply pedaled back home without struggling. We rode the GS and G3 downtown to meetings well dressed without breaking a sweat.
The Propella E-Bike is an e-bike we haven’t written much about yet but are currently testing it for CleanTechnica. This is one very sweet e-bike. What makes it really stand out is that it doesn’t feel like an e-bike. Most e-bikes feel like electric bicycles. The Propella feels like a normal bicycle that just happens to have an electric motor. It’s not in your face and it’s a very sleek and light bike. Stay tuned for more on that bike. Oh, and the price? $1,200. Not bad for an entry-level e-bike that will make you feel you are riding on a well designed, well-executed bicycle.
To find out if you can ride your bike on a public roadway, you have to look up your own state motor vehicle statutes. Yes, even though your state may not call your e-bike a motor vehicle, it will still need to obey the traffic laws. Regular bicycles have to obey traffic laws, as do people on horses, or even pedestrians. Your local state may have very definite rules as to what is an e-bike, what is a moped, and what is a motorcycle. You may need a drivers license to ride an e-bike, or maybe not, depending on the exact wording of your local state motor vehicle statutes.

The California section indicates the need for an M-1 or M-2. Not completely correct, if the motorized bicycle, moped, scooter, motorcycle, has 3 wheels (attached sidecar or trike) then a Class C is enough, and no special motorcyle endorsement is needed.
Is my e-bike a moped? Lets see. The bike has a 20 amps controller, and 36V battery. 20 amps X 36volts = 720 One horsepower is about 750 watts. The drive system doesn’t require me to shift. But wait a minute, the law says “if an internal combustion engine” so that doesn’t matter about the shifting. Apparently the law understands that other types of motors such as electric don’t have transmissions. Suppose my electric motor did drive the chain of the bike, and required shifting. Doesn’t matter, it’s still not an internal combustion engine.
