I am in the process of opening a E Bike outfitting business,I have been experimenting with various motor drive systems, hub direct drive motors, hub gear drive, and at last a mid hub drive. I’ m 68years old my first attempt is 1000 w 48 v 15 ah it’s on a Schwinn MTB I’ve put about 750 miles since May of this year , I ‘d like to try a good peddle assist system as mine dose not work properly and the twist throttle has looped me a couple of times, I use the lowest assist level option, on a recent ride I was able to squeeze 62.5 miles out of full charge with the big hub drive, by just nearly cracking the throttle

Before explaining why, let’s make clear what we mean by an electric bicycle. These are not mopeds or motorcycles, but bicycles that can be pedaled with or without an assist from an electric motor. They’re sometimes called “pedelecs” or “pedal assist” bicycles because in Europe the boost from the motor only kicks in if you pedal; in the U.S., most e-bicycles also come equipped with a throttle to turn on the motor without any pedaling required. Riding an electric bike feels a bit like riding a conventional bike with a brisk wind at your back; the motor helps you go faster and climb hills, but it’s not the primary source of propulsion. Unlike mopeds or electric scooters, e-bicycles are typically permitted on bike paths, and they can’t travel faster than 20 mph.
Some assembly of your new electric bike may be required. Often, this merely involves attaching the front wheel, but assembly chores are sometimes more complex than that. Several manufacturers provide instructional videos to help owners with the task of e-bike assembly.

More powerful pedelecs which are not legally classed as bicycles are dubbed S-Pedelecs (short for Schnell-Pedelecs, i.e. Speedy-Pedelecs) in Germany. These have a motor more powerful than 250 watts and less limited, or unlimited, pedal-assist, i.e. the motor does not stop assisting the rider once 25 km/h has been reached. S-Pedelec class e-bikes are therefore usually classified as mopeds or motorcycles rather than as bicycles and therefore may (depending on the jurisdiction) need to be registered and insured, the rider may need some sort of driver’s license (either car or motorcycle) and motorcycle helmets may have to be worn.
Lithium manganese batteries are used in the latest Nissan Leaf electric car. It’s claimed they generate more power and last longer. The new Leaf has double the range of its predecessor, but we’ve seen these batteries in very few (and very expensive) e-bikes so far.
Like electric cars, electric bicycles are manufactured by a mix of startup companies and established players, including Schwinn, Trek, and Giant. Industry executives cite several reasons why e-bicycle sales are poised to take off in the U.S. Most important is the fact that more Americans than ever already bike to work, and that cities and towns are building infrastructure to accommodate them. According to the League of American Bicyclists, bike commuting grew by 47 percent nationally between 2000 and 2011, and it grew by 80 percent in communities designated as “bicycle friendly” by the league. Cities including New York, Chicago, Washington, and Los Angeles are building dedicated bike lanes, like those found in northern Europe, to make commuting safer and easier.
China is the world’s leading manufacturer of e-bikes, with 22.2 million units produced in 2009. One of the biggest manufacturers of E-bikes in the world is Geoby. Production is concentrated in five regions, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Shanghai. China exported 370,000 e-bikes in 2009.

All of which raises a question: Can electric bicycles help solve big environmental problems? The industry — which is making a push to expand its sales in the U.S. — says e-bicycles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and traffic congestion, while enabling Americans, two-third of whom are obese or overweight, to become more active. The Easy Motion Big Bud Pro left a fun impression on us. What’s not to like about those chubby fat tires with two electric motors, one in the back and front? Sporting a 350W electric motor in the back and 250W on the front wheel, this was one fun bike to ride. Why two electric motors on an e-bike? Frankly said, it’s not that much different for everyday riding, but the e-bike came alive on gravel and sandy paths. I like having both options. The throttle is great for getting a quick burst of speed, like when going through an intersection. It is also good when you are riding in a situation that requires you to be able to vary your speed quickly. I like the pedal-assist when riding on open stretches of road. On my Pedego Interceptor I can change the pedal-assist mode very easily so if I need to drop down from Super Girl #5 to Modest Mouse #2 I can do that quickly.
