A recent report from the consulting firm eCycleElectric said that approximately 250,000 e-bikes were sold in America last year, representing 70% growth over 2015. Other estimates suggest the business could double again this year.
Pedelecs are much like conventional bicycles in use and function — the electric motor only provides assistance, most notably when the rider would otherwise struggle against a headwind or be going uphill. Pedelecs are therefore especially useful for people living in hilly areas where riding a bike would prove too strenuous for many to consider taking up cycling as a daily means of transport. They are also useful when it would be helpful for the riders who more generally need some assistance, e.g. for elderly people.
Electric bikes (or Pedelecs) have been on the cycling scene for a few years already, however these have evolved from a necessity, which was primarily used for riders with health or fitness issues, into the new breed of serious off road bikes. All of our bikes are the pedal assist (not the throttle type) so some effort is required, the amount is up to you. Whether you’re looking to commute without getting too sweaty, to hitting the downhills with the power of an inbuilt uplift, there is a bike to suit your needs. Why own an e-bike? land management regulators and mountain bike trail access advocates have argued for bans of electric bicycles on outdoor trails that are accessible to mountain bikes, citing potential safety hazards as well as the potential for electric bikes to damage trails. A study conducted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, however, found that the physical impacts of low-powered pedal-assist electric mountain bikes may be similar to traditional mountain bikes.
I have now done 2700 miles of leisure cycling with a range of up to 40 Miles. Usually I leave the assist control in ECO mode (50% extra torque)for most of the ride but as I live on top of a hill I usually finish the ride in MED (100% extra torque) or HI (150% extra torque). Think of a this type of pedelec as having a torque motor which applies an extra torque that is a multiplier of the torque you are applying to the chain. Mine is coupled to a Shamano Nexus 7 seven speed hub, and is great for always being in the right gear by being able to change gear when stationary.

The Propella E-Bike is an e-bike we haven’t written much about yet but are currently testing it for CleanTechnica. This is one very sweet e-bike. What makes it really stand out is that it doesn’t feel like an e-bike. Most e-bikes feel like electric bicycles. The Propella feels like a normal bicycle that just happens to have an electric motor. It’s not in your face and it’s a very sleek and light bike. Stay tuned for more on that bike. Oh, and the price? $1,200. Not bad for an entry-level e-bike that will make you feel you are riding on a well designed, well-executed bicycle.
An e-bike conforming to these conditions is considered to be a pedelec in the EU and is legally classed as a bicycle. The EN15194 standard is valid across the whole of the EU and has also been adopted by some non-EU European nations and also some jurisdictions outside of Europe (such as the state of Victoria in Australia).

The oldest patent for an electric bike I’ve been able to find at the US Patent and Trademark Office is this one, by Ogden Bolton, Jr. of Canton Ohio, which was filed in September 1895 and granted three months later. You can see from these original diagrams that it bears an amazingly close resemblance to modern electric bikes. In the general picture on the left, you can see there’s a hub motor on the rear wheel (blue), a battery suspended from the frame (red), and a simple handlebar control to make the thing stop and go. In the more detailed cutaway of the hub motor on the right, you can see there’s a six-pole magnet in the center (orange) bolted to the frame and an armature (made from coiled wire, yellow) that rotates around it when the current is switched on. It’s quite a hefty motor even by modern standards; Ogdon mentions “a heavy current at low voltage—for instance, to carry one hundred amperes at ten volts.” So that’s 1000 watts, which is about twice the power of a typical modern bike hub motor.

Before a return is sent, the customer must have a return authorization number provided by PIM Bicycles. If a customer sends a return without the authorization of PIM a refund will not be issued. Returns without an authorization from PIM are considered abandoned property.
Pennsylvania is one of the states where non-ebikers who shouldn’t get involved are anyway. Let me explain why they look foolish for trying to control what they don’t even understand. PA vehicle code states 5 “requirements” or criterion which are critical to legal ebikes. the 3rd states in order for it to be a motor vehicle (not a bike) it MUST have an automatic transmission. Even though the code had the term “electric bike” added to it, it still left the “automatic transmission” requirement. Electric motors and bicycles don’t have automatic transmissions, and aren’t really classified in the vehicle code for that reason. Yet on Penndot’s (PA’s DMV) website there is a promiscuous “FACT SHEET” which says electric bikes are all illegal without registration and a DL. I would tell them to stop being so dumb, but I’ve noticed this approach rarely changes the ‘facts’, and I”ll just leave that nest of bees alone. I wonder who wrote that turd. Not one of us, we don’t step on our own rights, do we? I don’t even try to step on others’. But have to be careful where you step. I like laws. But they have to make sense. Ebikes are harmless and can reduce the plague of pollution to heal what I’ve seen become noticeably dirtier (waterways, snow) in my own lifespan, What a shame to even consider it being illegal.

Locks in any speed below 20 mph. Speed will be maintained without pedaling or using the throttle until: the brake is applied, pushing any button or giving additional throttle input. Pedaling can increase the speed, but the e-bike will return to the pre-set speed if pedaling stops.
Maintenance tasks for an e-bike – chain tension adjustments, brake adjustments – are often the same as they are for ordinary bicycles. You can probably handle these tasks yourself. When it comes to battery and motor maintenance, however, we recommend using an expert.
