Then there are the dedicated off-road e-bikes. These bikes push the boundaries of what’s possible, and the combination of materials and technologies doesn’t come cheap. You’ll pay a minimum of $3,500 for an off-road e-bike. During the course of our research, we found one for as much as $36,000.
As a power electronics engineer I had intended designing and developing a torque assist bike so was surprised to find that a few manufacturers brought them out in Europe recently. I bought a Raleigh Vélo Cité with a 36V 10Ahr lithium battery. I would never use a throttle or cadence type unless I was infirm and I am sure that torque sensing pedelecs will become the norm as prices fall.
Electric bikes and E-bike kits (bikes with electric conversion kits) are part of a wide range of Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) that provide convenient local transportation. Generally designed for one person and small cargo capacity, electric bike range, speed, and cost are moderate. For most of us, the majority of our trips are less than 20 miles – within the range of most e-bikes considering the latest advances in affordable lithium batteries. Clean, quiet, and efficient LEVs offer the advantages of an extra car without the burdens.
Globally, electric bicycles outsell electric cars by a wide margin. An estimated 29.3 million e-bicycles were sold in 2012, with perhaps 90 percent of those selling in China, which has more electric bikes than cars on its roads. E-bicycles are popular in Europe, too, selling about 380,000 a year in Germany and 175,000 in the Netherlands in 2012. By comparison, about 120,000 electric cars were sold worldwide.
PikeResearch, a for-profit market research firm, released a report in 2010 which included market analysis and forecasts for electric two-wheel vehicles. They concluded that, “The worldwide electric two-wheel vehicle market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9% through 2016” and that “a lack of a well-defined retail channel hampers faster adoption in North America and Europe.” PikeResearch also forecasted that worldwide sales of e-bikes, e-motorcycles, and e-scooters will reach more than 466 million between 2010 and 2016, and China will continue to dominate the world market, with more than 95% of sales during this period. E-bikes sales are expected to have the largest share with 56% of the market.
The majority of folks can’t even recognize an ebike…and if you don’t advertise it, you can ride everywhere…I do…parks…trails…even paths that say no motorized vehicles…but I use courtesy and respect and ride within limits of the path…until I get out of sight…
This past July 1st we moved our location to Croydon, PA and doubled our space. Additionally we’re looking to hire at least 2 additional employees! You ARE allowed to ride an e-bike in Texas faster than 20-MPH if you pedal up that speed. So when you are going fast and see a cop, pedal as fast as you can. We call it clown pedaling. Looks really clownish if you happen to be going 40-MPH. Don’t expect a cop to be fooled if your e-bike really goes 40-MPH…but sometimes cops can surprise you.
Some power-on-demand only e-bikes can hardly be confused with, let alone categorised as, bicycles. For example, the Noped is a term used by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario for e-bikes which do not have pedals or in which the pedals have been removed from their motorised bicycle. These are better categorised as electric mopeds or electric motorcycles.
Electric bikes are a green alternative to driving a vehicle. Studies carried out in several towns and cities show that the average car speed in rush hour traffic can dip as low as 18 to 20 mph. Electric bike speed can be as high as 15 mph. With an electric bike, you can reduce pollution, improve fitness, and still arrive at the same time as your car-bound colleagues.

The Surprising Health Benefits of an Electric Bike by Gretchen Reynolds. The New York Times, July 6, 2016. Electric bikes can encourage motorists back onto two wheels, with real benefits to their health.
Although there are plenty of other e-bikes that impressed us, we wanted to choose three that stand out for a few reasons. But before we continue, an honorable mention goes to the Copenhagen Wheel. If you’re not sure where to start, the Copenhagen Wheel can fit on most bikes and can even be ordered fully installed on a few bikes. More to come on that.

Luckily regardless of the laws, I dont hear much about them being enforced anywhere. For example ebikes are completely illiegal in NYC and people still ride them there all the time, and in fact the city has probably the most successful ebike store in the country: nycewheels
Brakes: Caliper brakes (the type found on ordinary bicycles) are common on e-bikes, but disk brakes offer better stopping power. In wet conditions, however, initial braking can be slowed as you first clear water from the disk. It’s a minor thing, and you soon get used to it.
Go big or go home with the Yuba Spicy Curry. This is the largest of the e-bikes we’ve amassed in this collection, and it’s for the serious commuter or the person who does all of his or her shopping by bike. Even Costco are possible for the Spicy Curry’s powerful electric motor and the massive cargo-ready space on the bike’s sides and back. It can seat your younger kids, with low rails on the side, and features LED lights so you and your passengers stay safe. Of course, this is a bike that needs an electric boost unless you can push seriously massive watts, but thankfully, it comes with the Currie Centerdrive 500-watt motor that can make the bike go up to 28 miles per hour.
Like electric cars, electric bicycles are manufactured by a mix of startup companies and established players, including Schwinn, Trek, and Giant. Industry executives cite several reasons why e-bicycle sales are poised to take off in the U.S. Most important is the fact that more Americans than ever already bike to work, and that cities and towns are building infrastructure to accommodate them. According to the League of American Bicyclists, bike commuting grew by 47 percent nationally between 2000 and 2011, and it grew by 80 percent in communities designated as “bicycle friendly” by the league. Cities including New York, Chicago, Washington, and Los Angeles are building dedicated bike lanes, like those found in northern Europe, to make commuting safer and easier.
Budget Travel: Many e-bikes are cheaper to operate per mile than a car. According to e-bike manufacturer Elby’s calculations, the average annual cost of maintaining and operating a car is $9,283. Compare that to their calculated average annual cost of maintaining and operating an e-bike, which is just $390. The fuel’s cheaper, too: the cost of a 12-gallon gasoline fill-up is about $33.60 (12 gallons at $2.85/gallon). Cost to fully charge an e-bike, on the other hand, is about $0.50 (480 watt/hr battery at $0.10/kwh).
After introducing the CrossCurrent S and building the HYPE, we put everything we learned into designing the Ultimate Fat-Tire Commuter E-Bike. Powered by a 750 Watt motor, the RipCurrent S is capable of Class 3 (28 mph) performance with torque-sensing pedal assist included. The new 52 Volt battery platform has over 1,000 Watt-Hours and 70+ miles of real-world range. We incorporated the latest charger technology to extend the lifespan to over 1,500 charge cycles. The RipCurrent S arrives fully-loaded with hydraulic disc, cruise control, air suspension fork, rack, fenders, a 1,050 lumen front headlight and more.
An e-bike conforming to these conditions is considered to be a pedelec in the EU and is legally classed as a bicycle. The EN15194 standard is valid across the whole of the EU and has also been adopted by some non-EU European nations and also some jurisdictions outside of Europe (such as the state of Victoria in Australia).
Rear hub motors are also popular. Some owners suggest they make the back of the bike feel a bit heavy (the battery is often back there, too), but balance is still good. In many ways, this is rear-wheel drive like you get with a scooter or motorbike. The rear hub looks larger than usual, but in profile, it looks much like an ordinary bike.
If you are concerned about the speed and power of an electric bike, pay attention to the motor size. Electric motor size is measured in watts and usually ranges between 250 and 750. When deciding on the appropriate amount of wattage, think about factors like the weight of the rider and the desired speed and terrain for the bike. If your child will mostly be on a flat surface, lower wattage should suffice; if they are planning to ride up and down hills, look for a bike with a larger motor.
China has experienced an explosive growth of sales of non-assisted e-bikes including scooter type, with annual sales jumping from 56,000 units in 1998 to over 21 million in 2008, and reaching an estimated fleet of 120 million e-bikes in early 2010. This boom was triggered by Chinese local governments’ efforts to restrict motorcycles in city centers to avoid traffic disruption and accidents. By late 2009 motorcycles are banned or restricted in over ninety major Chinese cities. Users began replacing traditional bicycles and motorcycles and e-bike became an alternative to commuting by car. Nevertheless, road safety concerns continue as around 2,500 e-bike related deaths were registered in 2007. By late 2009 ten cities had also banned or imposed restrictions on e-bikes on the same grounds as motorcycles. Among these cities were Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Foshan, Changzhou, and Dongguang.
Electric bikes (e-bikes) are very similar to regular bikes, only more fun! An e-bike has a motor and a battery that provides assistance to help the rider go further and faster. While still getting an effective work-out, you can ride up tough hills easily, enjoy long distances and have a faster commute. E-bikes are also environmentally friendly! With an e-bike, you choose your speed and assist, putting you in control of your entire ride.
Don’t just trust what a person that wants to sell you an e-bike says. There is no substitute for digging up the law in your own state to figure out if what you plan to buy, or have bought is legal for you to ride in your state.
Government does have an interest in the matter of someone running a stop sign. It does not matter if you are in a truck, car, or are riding a bicycle, you must obey traffic laws. In Texas you are required to use a headlight at night and have a rear reflector. I would change the law to require a rear light if I were in the Legislature.
Pedal assist, also referred to as pedelec, is a mode that provides power only when you are pedaling. If you are used to riding a traditional bike, the pedal assist mode has a more intuitive feel compared to the throttle mode.
An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, powerbike or booster bike, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion. Many kinds of e-bikes are available worldwide, from e-bikes that only have a small motor to assist the rider’s pedal-power (i.e., pedelecs) to somewhat more powerful e-bikes which tend closer to moped-style functionality: all, however, retain the ability to be pedalled by the rider and are therefore not electric motorcycles. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and the lighter varieties can travel up to 25 to 32 km/h (16 to 20 mph), depending on the laws of the country in which they are sold, while the more high-powered varieties can often do in excess of 45 km/h (28 mph). In some markets, such as Germany, they are gaining in popularity and taking some market share away from conventional bicycles, while in others, such as China, they are replacing fossil fuel-powered mopeds and small motorcycles.
