There’s no question that electric bikes are far better for the environment than petrol-powered car engines. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely perfect. Making and disposing of batteries can be very polluting. Not only that, but an electric bicycle is still using energy that has to come from somewhere. You may think you’re using clean green power, but the electricity you use for getting about might have come from a filthy old, coal-fired power plant or one driven by nuclear energy. (If you’re lucky, of course, it might have come from solar panels or a wind turbine!) Electric bikes are nowhere near as environmentally friendly as ordinary push bikes, but nothing is ever perfect—and, as people often say, “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Electric bikes are certainly a step in the right direction. If everyone used them to get about instead of cars, global warming might be less of a problem, and the world would be a far cleaner and healthier place!

I have put over 200 miles on my EVELO in the past few weeks. Nothing but fun. And more fun! After 25 miles on pedal assist I still have over half a battery charge left. Hills become flat. I have been riding on pavement, dirt roads, and trails in the forest. Riding a regular bike is quite a bit of work in hilly areas like where I live. My EVELO makes riding fun.

The wording is important on this part I think. It says “incapable”. So I think even if you had a CA hooked up to it that allowed you to regulate the speed and wattage output, if the overall system was still “capable” of exceeding those limits, then it would not fall under electric assist bike. The RCW also says if you can pedal the bike above 20mph on human power alone, the motor can’t be capable of adding more speed beyond that. In other words it shuts off, or goes into regen?

Yet Americans bought as many electric bicycles as they did electric cars last year. About 53,000 electric bicycles were sold, according to Dave Hurst, an analyst with Navigant Research who tracks the industry. Electric car sales came in at 52,835.
The Netherlands has a fleet of 18 million bicycles. E-bikes have reached a market share of 10% by 2009, as e-bikes sales quadrupled from 40,000 units to 153,000 between 2006 and 2009, and the electric-powered models represented 25% of the total bicycle sales revenue in that year. By early 2010 one in every eight bicycles sold in the country is electric-powered despite the fact that on average an e-bike is three times more expensive than a regular bicycle.

Looks pretty similar to the Texas definitions, but there is one key difference. There is no definition for electric bike. There seems to be no such thing as an electric bike in New Mexico. The closest match is “moped” So it looks like in the State of New Mexico the example e-bike is a moped. Some good news, you can go 30 mph. And you don’t need to register and insure a moped.
China has experienced an explosive growth of sales of non-assisted e-bikes including scooter type, with annual sales jumping from 56,000 units in 1998 to over 21 million in 2008, and reaching an estimated fleet of 120 million e-bikes in early 2010. This boom was triggered by Chinese local governments’ efforts to restrict motorcycles in city centers to avoid traffic disruption and accidents. By late 2009 motorcycles are banned or restricted in over ninety major Chinese cities. Users began replacing traditional bicycles and motorcycles and e-bike became an alternative to commuting by car. Nevertheless, road safety concerns continue as around 2,500 e-bike related deaths were registered in 2007. By late 2009 ten cities had also banned or imposed restrictions on e-bikes on the same grounds as motorcycles. Among these cities were Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Foshan, Changzhou, and Dongguang.

The two most common types of hub motors used in electric bicycles are brushed and There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. BLDC hub motors are a common modern design with the motor built into the wheel hub itself and the stator fixed solidly to the axle and the magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The bicycle wheel hub is the motor. The power levels of motors used are influenced by available legal categories and are often, but not always limited to under 750 watts.
A moped is a two or three wheeled motorized (electric or liquid fuel) device with a cylinder displacement not exceeding fifty cubic centimeters and produces not more than two gross brake horsepower. The device may not be capable of exceeding thirty miles per hour on level ground. Pedals and sixteen-inch or larger diameter wheels are not required, provided the device and all equipment was originally manufactured for public road use. Mopeds are required to have two mirrors, horn, brakes on all wheels, speedometer/odometer, head light, tail light, brake light, license plate light, turn signals (if originally equipped), license plate lamp, red reflector to the rear, and the operator and any passenger are required to wear a helmet meeting requirements outlined in RCW 46.37.350.

Controllers for brushless motors: E-bikes require high initial torque and therefore models that use brushless motors typically have Hall sensor commutation for speed and angle measurement. An electronic controller provides assistance as a function of the sensor inputs, the vehicle speed and the required force. The controllers generally allow input by means of potentiometer or Hall Effect twist grip (or thumb-operated lever throttle), closed-loop speed control for precise speed regulation, protection logic for over-voltage, over-current and thermal protection. Bikes with a pedal assist function typically have a disc on the crank shaft featuring a ring of magnets coupled with a Hall sensor giving rise to a series of pulses, the frequency of which is proportional to pedaling speed. The controller uses pulse width modulation to regulate the power to the motor. Sometimes support is provided for regenerative braking but infrequent braking and the low mass of bicycles limits recovered energy. An implementation is described in an application note for a 200 W, 24 V Brushless DC (BLDC) motor.
Compared to the torque sensor system, the cadence sensor will just provide the assist based purely on the level assist you have selected and it will not increase or decrease the assist based on your actual pedal power. You could be pedaling very lightly or very hard and it will provide the same level of assist.

We easily rode 30 e-bikes or more this year. Almost all of them impressed us one way or another. Some are expensive and others more affordable. As with most expensive e-bikes, you pay for the difference in quality and feel. But not all entry-level e-bikes have to feel like a cheesy attempt to convert a heavy regular bike with a battery pack and an electric motor.

The e-bikes in New York should be legalized. This was a very bad idea from somebody to make e-bikes illegal in New York. Making something illegal isn’t to expect that nobody is going to make that thing. Those who made e-bikes illegal in New York should neither expect themselves that nobody is going to ride them there. Riding a gasoline powered motorbike is legal but the e-bikes are illegal in New York, I think this is all ridicilous. New York is one of the world’s biggest cities and there are more vehicles than in London, Stockholm, Warsaw, Berlin or even Gothenburg in Sweden. In all of those cities e-bikes are legal, these cities are named as examples but e-bikes should be legal in New York. They should think more about pollutions and the air quality, this has to be as good as possible in that big cities like New York or even bigger cities. India and China have got real problems with their air quality, especially in the cities where they drive cars and motorbikes a lot. The cargo motorbikes are usual especially in India and those should get replaced by cargo ELECTRIC motorbikes making no pollutions. India and China are the biggest countries in the world and there should be more electric vehicles than gasoline powered vehicles. Today there are batteries that can be charged as fast as refuelling a gasoline powered vehicle, normally 5 minutes. But the batteries get only 50 % of their capacity and charging them that fast all the time will use up them faster than if they will get full charges all the time. Fast charging is also not good for the batteries, it’s better to charge batteries too long. Once I tried charging my mobile phone battery a time that was too long and the battery was longing for a longer time than usually. Too long charges are better than those taking 5 minutes but actually still not the best thing a battery can get. I would recommend to charge the batteries in the time they need mostly and charge them too long sometimes only.
