Pedelecs are pointless. Most people who buy electric bikes want to cruise on electric and pedal just a little. Plus you can keep up with traffic better with throttle and more speed. Its actually dafer for you. Some pedelecs you never know when the darn motor will kick in. The pedelec sensor fails often. Its a nightmare for ebike companies to fix!

Pedelecs are much like conventional bicycles in use and function — the electric motor only provides assistance, most notably when the rider would otherwise struggle against a headwind or be going uphill. Pedelecs are therefore especially useful for people living in hilly areas where riding a bike would prove too strenuous for many to consider taking up cycling as a daily means of transport. They are also useful when it would be helpful for the riders who more generally need some assistance, e.g. for elderly people.

A 2008 market survey showed that the average distance traveled in the Netherlands by commuters on a standard bicycle is 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) while with an e-bike this distance increases to 9.8 kilometres (6.1 mi).[76] This survey also showed that e-bike ownership is particularly popular among people aged 65 and over, but limited among commuters. The e-bike is used in particular for recreational bicycle trips, shopping and errands.[76]

There are three different e-bikes to choose from. All are a blast to ride, but each has unique features that will help you decide which one is right for you. Or you could just go with the one you think looks best, which is cool, because every model showcases our attention to detail and unique style. Ready? Let’s Go!

We chose this trip for the wonderful locale AND the e-bikes. They were liberating. You still have to pedal, but the bike gives you an extra boost to get up the rolling hills. This leveled the playing field for us, so we could keep up with younger, more experienced cyclists and get our full share of joy in biking the wine country. The e-bikes — and our outstanding guides — enabled us to take a full measure of pride in cycling more than 160 miles in 6 days, our biggest trip ever.

H. “motor vehicle” means every vehicle that is self-propelled and every vehicle that is propelled by electric power obtained from batteries or from overhead trolley wires, but not operated upon rails; but for the purposes of the Mandatory Financial Responsibility Act [66-5-201 NMSA 1978], “motor vehicle” does not include “special mobile equipment”;

Ebikes that look like motorcycles (such as Vespa style scooters with pedals) WILL get you pulled over. If it looks like it needs registration and tags…a cop will assume you are riding it illegally without them:

We want our riders to feel connected to our products. So we design them to be stylish and inspiring. This guides our design philosophy and is why we integrate all the electronics so they are not part of the rider experience.

If you’re completely new to ebikes, check out this short video overview and e-book guide that’s free on Amazon if you’ve got Prime. I’ve also done an in depth video interview about ebikes with my uncle since he has been riding one to work every day for over a year now.

the reason for the weirdness in the law text? The reason is till recently, <50CC gas motor assisted bicycles were completely legal. Car dealers didn't like it, and pushed to get the laws changed to make it harder to use them. They reclassified the under 50cc motor assisted gas bicycles as a moped, requiring all the usual trappings. The situation in New York State is not as bleak as you imply. New York State has yet to define what an electric bike is, so in the meantime the federal definition applies (an ebike goes less than 20mph, with less than 750 watts of power). The federal definition says that any bicycle within these specifications is not a “motor vehicle” or a “motorized vehicle” or a “motorized bicycle”; it is essentially a bicycle. Only state laws for bicycles apply. This makes sense: the intent of the federal law was to define a reasonable speed and power for ebikes that isn’t significantly different from human power. We’re talking about a vehicle that by definition is not capable of behaving significantly differently than a human-powered bicycle, so it should have the same benefits and restrictions as a human-powered bicycle. States like New York State that simply don’t define ebikes don’t have a basis for restricting them, except by referring to the federal law. It may be that this very clear idea needs to be tested in court, or it may be that Albany comes to its senses and passes a legal definition of ebikes similar to the Federal definition. A lot of pedal assist bikes have different levels of assistance, for example: low, medium, or high assist.  Please note that some e-bikes have 4 or 5 pedal assist settings, but for this example we will just stick with low, medium, and high. The environmental credentials of e-bikes, and electric / human powered hybrids generally, have led some municipal authorities to use them, such as Little Rock, Arkansas with their Wavecrest electric power-assisted bicycles or Cloverdale, California police with Zap e-bikes. China’s e-bike manufacturers, such as Xinri, are now partnering with universities in a bid to improve their technology in line with international environmental standards, backed by the Chinese government who is keen to improve the export potential of the Chinese manufactured e-bikes.[64] Cape Fear Community College students are utilizing the E-BikeKit™ electric bike kit in the designing and building of their own electric bicycles!   ORIGINAL ARTICLE POSTED the Port City Daily staff "CFCC student-built electric bikes to be in Azalea Fest parade Some innovative designs by Cape Fear Community College students will be featured in this year’s N.C. Many people even prefer these bikes to cars. They can move at very high speeds, and cyclists don’t have to struggle a lot to accelerate; the bicycle can speed up with minimal effort. The time or distance an electric bike battery will run between chargings is impossible to judge with much accuracy. There are too many variables: terrain, speed, rider weight, bike load (shopping, kids, luggage), and more. However, we can make a few generalizations about an e-bike’s recharge time and overall working life. These generalizations should be used for comparison purposes only.
