Of course, this is a bike that needs an electric boost unless you can push seriously massive watts, but thankfully, it comes with the Currie Centerdrive 500-watt motor that can make the bike go up to 28 miles per hour.
If you have dynamo-powered bicycle lights, you already own an electric-powered bicycle! Consider: as you pump your legs up and down on the pedals, you make the wheels rotate. A small dynamo (generator) mounted on the rear wheel produces a tiny current of electricity that keeps your back safety lamp lit in the dark. Now suppose you could run this process backward. What if you removed the lamp and replaced it with a large battery. The battery would kick out a steady electric current, driving the dynamo in reverse so that it spun around like an electric motor. As the dynamo/motor turned, it would rotate the tire and make the bike go along without any help from your pedaling. Hey presto: an electric bike! It may sound a bit far-fetched, but this is more or less exactly how electric bikes work.

There’s a bolt-on DC electric motor (weighing just over 3kg or 7lb) just above the back wheel, behind the police officer’s foot, pressing against the tire and driving it by simple friction. The motor’s powered by a compact lead-acid battery (weighing about 5.5 kg or 12 lb) inside a protective nylon bag. Say you’re a responsible 20 mph max rider using proper power, but someone idiot car driver opens their door and you have no time to avoid the whack! You don’t have a helmet on (which is the law in Calif. using power assist). On a regular bike the idiot car driver would be liable for your injuries. Since you weren’t wearing a helmet their insurance rep could argue court you were negligent and broke the law…hence your brain injury was YOUR fault, not the car driver. Same would happen if they discover you monkeyed with the max. speed sensor…or the max power level.
I a torque sensing pedelec just over a year ago and I find this system very intuitive. The harder you pedal the more (and proportional) assist you get. Good for accelerating away in traffic and you don’t have to do anything other than pedal. It is analogous to the power steering on a car but in this case the assist power is on the pedals.
