Yes, There Are Age Limits: According to Portland State University’s TREC Transportation Insight for Vibrant communities, as of December 2015, at least 40 US states and Canadian provinces had a minimum operator age for e-bikes, typically 14 or 16 years of age. In Alberta, 12 year olds can operate an e-bike, but in Quebec, you must be 18.

In 2012, two e-bike advocates completed the first 4,000-mile (6,400 km) transcontinental e-bike tour from New York to San Francisco to advocate for e-bikes in major cities across the U.S.[78] Pedego Electric Bikes is the best selling brand in the U.S. Many e-bikes in the United States are standard bicycles converted using a kit. In general, the kits include the motor (the majority of which are hub motors built into the front or rear wheel), a speed controller, throttle (usually twist-grip or thumb throttle), necessary wiring and connectors, and a battery. Several U.S. companies offer conversion kits which also offer advanced lithium battery packs. Major manufacturers also offer complete e-bikes. Trek offers a line of e-bikes using the Bionx system in which the rider programs the controller to determine how much effort the motor will give in response to rider effort, from 25% up to 200% of the rider’s power. This system ensures a minimum level of rider participation and is also used to comply with many European laws mandating partial human effort before the motor engages.

Set the maximum speed limit of the throttle or pedal assist system. We can electronically lockout the speed to 20 mph to comply with states with Class 1 or Class 2 E-bike regulations. Just make this request in the notes section at checkout.

Folding Electric Bikes- These are mostly used when people need to combine different modes of transport. For example, if you need first to take the train or bus, a folding e-bike can be useful to carry along. Also, very short trips are more convenient with these electric bikes since you don’t need to bother tying them up. Typically, these are very light, even with the motor and battery.

Continue reading subsection D. It only applies to state laws that are “more stringent than the Federal law or requirements referred to in subsection A” — then go back to subsection A and see if it says anything at all about the operation of e-bikes. It does not. only refers to 16 CFR 1500.18 – (“Banned toys and other banned articles intended for use by children.”) and 16 CFR Part 1512 (“REQUIREMENTS FOR BICYCLES”), which has such thrilling subsections as “Bicycle Front Fork Cantilever Bending Test Rig” and “Toe Clearance and Chain Guard Requirements” but says absolutely nothing about what types of roads or paths e-bikes are allowed to be operated upon, etc.
