Some answers to the question customers are now asking most frequently. At Seattle Electric Bike, we have been celebrating the emergence of mid-drive motor systems onto the electric bike scene due to their unique responsiveness for on-demand power and torque.

Lower the voltage.  Depending on the battery, the first block or two of riding might do the trick.  If your battery drops voltage fast, you might be a lot slower than 20-MPH for 98% of your ride. I’d call that close enough if that is the case.  Or maybe I can just charge my battery to a lower voltage.  Maybe if I charge it to 40 volts instead of the normal 42V-44V, I won’t be quite so fast.  That could work if my battery still gets me going 23-MPH for too long to fudge it.

Some of the less expensive e-bikes used bulky lead acid batteries, whereas newer models generally used NiMH, NiCd, and/or Li-ion batteries, which offered lighter, denser capacity batteries. Performance varies; however, in general there is an increase in range and speed with the latter battery types.

Batteries: Battery packs can be fitted in all kinds of different positions, but often, are fixed to a rack behind the rider. If you plan on carrying anything, this configuration could be problematic.

Another type of electric assist motor, often referred to as the mid-drive system, is increasing in popularity. With this system, the electric motor is not built into the wheel but is usually mounted near (often under) the bottom bracket shell. In more typical configurations, a cog or wheel on the motor drives a belt or chain that engages with a pulley or sprocket fixed to one of the arms of the bicycle’s crankset. Thus the propulsion is provided at the pedals rather than at the wheel, being eventually applied to the wheel via the bicycle’s standard drive train. An electric mid-drive combined with a hub gear at the back hub may require care due to the lack of a clutch mechanism to soften the shock to the gears at the moment of re-engagement. A stepless / coninuous ratio gear hub or a fully automatic gear hub may reduce the chocks due to the viscosity of oils used for liquid coupling instead of the mechanical couplings of the conventional gear hubs.

The Stromer ST1 Platinum may look less decked out than the other models, but this e-bike is pretty high-tech.
