We chose this trip for the wonderful locale AND the e-bikes. They were liberating. You still have to pedal, but the bike gives you an extra boost to get up the rolling hills. This leveled the playing field for us, so we could keep up with younger, more experienced cyclists and get our full share of joy in biking the wine country. The e-bikes — and our outstanding guides — enabled us to take a full measure of pride in cycling more than 160 miles in 6 days, our biggest trip ever.
The BULLS Monster E FS is, well, a monster of sorts. This was the Cadillac of e-bikes. Well engineered, luscious suspensions that make riding on obstacle tracks fun without killing your back. Like electric cars, electric bicycles are manufactured by a mix of startup companies and established players, including Schwinn, Trek, and Giant. Industry executives cite several reasons why e-bicycle sales are poised to take off in the U.S. Most important is the fact that more Americans than ever already bike to work, and that cities and towns are building infrastructure to accommodate them. According to the League of American Bicyclists, bike commuting grew by 47 percent nationally between 2000 and 2011, and it grew by 80 percent in communities designated as “bicycle friendly” by the league. Cities including New York, Chicago, Washington, and Los Angeles are building dedicated bike lanes, like those found in northern Europe, to make commuting safer and easier.

I have a pedelec and love it. I have three bikes, and I want to pedal, but when I have a meeting at night that is 7 miles away, I take the e-bike. It is enough of a boost to keep me from wanting to take the car at the end of a long day. It’s fun. Also, the laws on e-bikes continue to change, but it looks like the pedelecs will be classified as bikes, whereas bikes with throttles or self-propelled speeds of more than 20 mph are starting to become classified as “motor” vehicles and requiring registration in some states.

Though rear-wheel versions are available, most e-bike conversion kits are for the front wheel. They are easier to fit. However, they do change the balance of the bike, and brakes should also be uprated to cope with the additional weight. We’re not aware of any front hub motors on purpose-built electric bikes.
Most consumers want an e-bike that will accommodate its motor without being too cumbersome and will remain stable in spite of its electronic components. Some consumers want only the most basic of e-bike features, including lights, a cargo rack/basket, and a water bottle holder. Others are focused more heavily on safety features, such as brake type. Also, the 1899 U.S. Patent 627,066 by John Schnepf depicted a rear-wheel friction “roller-wheel” style drive electric bicycle. Schnepf’s invention was later re-examined and expanded in 1969 by G.A. The time or distance an electric bike battery will run between chargings is impossible to judge with much accuracy. There are too many variables: terrain, speed, rider weight, bike load (shopping, kids, luggage), and more. However, we can make a few generalizations about an e-bike’s recharge time and overall working life. These generalizations should be used for comparison purposes only.
So my e-bike was a bike before the motor was put on. But it’s not a bike when the motor is turned on. This could be important. If you are not using the motor, EVERY device propelled by human power with tandem wheels is a “bike” except for scooters. It does not seem to exclude carrying a motor you are not using on your “bike”.

Manuevers such as the one pictured above should only be used off the road ways. Use a lot of common sense.
