Pedelecs are much like conventional bicycles in use and function — the electric motor only provides assistance, most notably when the rider would otherwise struggle against a headwind or be going uphill. Pedelecs are therefore especially useful for people living in hilly areas where riding a bike would prove too strenuous for many to consider taking up cycling as a daily means of transport. They are also useful when it would be helpful for the riders who more generally need some assistance, e.g. for elderly people.

   But also some bad news. It states that the operator of a “moped” has to have a valid drivers license. No big deal, unless you lost yours in a DUI. If that is the case, then you might think twice about operating without a license, if you want to get your license back someday.

There was an explosion of electric bicycles (e-bikes) in 2017, and we can safely bet 2018 will give us even more, to choose from. The real question is, will anyone break the quality entry-level barrier? We think we found one.

A few electric bikes incorporate a technology that started in racecars: regenerative braking. When you brake, you create energy. That energy can be harvested and fed back into the battery, prolonging its life. Regenerative braking is only just being introduced to e-bikes, but it’s certainly something to watch out for.

We believe that only our riders should control the power and speed of our Electric Bicycles, so all of our bikes are throttle controlled. We believe that controlling the speed and brakes on a bicycle are intuitively linked as an extension of the hand.

Batteries: Battery packs can be fitted in all kinds of different positions, but often, they are fixed to a rack behind the rider. If you plan on carrying anything, this configuration could be problematic.

The batteries are the most important parts of the bike, because (if you don’t do any pedaling) they contain all the power that will drive you along. Typical electric bike batteries make about 350–500 W of power (that’s about 35–50 volts and 10 amps), which is about a quarter as much as you need to drive an electric toaster. In theory, you could use any kind of battery on a bicycle. In practice, however, you want to use something that stores lots of power without being too heavy—or you’ll be using half your power just moving the battery along! That tends to rule out heavy lead-acid batteries like the ones that start cars, though some electric bikes do use them. Lightweight lithium-ion batteries, similar to those used in laptop computers, mobile (cellular) phones, and MP3 players, are now the most popular choice, though they’re more expensive than older rechargeable battery technologies such as nickel-cadmium (“nicad”). Typical batteries will give your bicycle a range of 10–40 miles between charges (depending on the terrain) and a top speed of 10–20 mph (which is about the maximum most countries allow for these vehicles by law). You can extend the range by pedaling or free-wheeling some of the time.

Electric Mountain Bikes- Just like traditional mountain bikes, these are meant to be ridden on rough and hilly terrains. They are more powerful than city e-bikes, and this enables the bikes to go over rocks and other obstacles on the trail safely.

Connections are made with solid Nickel strips, spot welder to each cell. Each cell and each series is tested before assembly. The BMS will prevent over charging and will balance the cells after a full charge.

While the electric assist will ensure that you get that hill, an E-bike does not make up for the need to be a practiced and comfortable rider. Operators of E-bikes must be capable of and comfortable with all of the usual aspects of bike operation including mounting/dismounting, starting/stopping, pedaling, shifting gears, balancing and maneuvering in varying traffic and road conditions.

Riding Position: You also may wish to check out an e-bike’s riding position before investing in it. For short trips, the riding position might not make much difference, but for long journeys, the upright “Dutch” style with pulled-back handlebars is very comfortable – particularly for tall riders. The same goes for mountain bike styles, though these bikes are not often designed to actually go off-road.

I bought a torque sensing pedelec just over a year ago and I find this system very intuitive. The harder you pedal the more (and proportional) assist you get. Good for accelerating away in traffic and you don’t have to do anything other than pedal. It is analogous to the power steering on a car but in this case the assist power is on the pedals.

The Easy Motion Big Bud Pro left a fun impression on us. What’s not to like about those chubby fat tires with two electric motors, one in the back and front? Sporting a 350W electric motor in the back and 250W on the front wheel, this was one fun bike to ride. Why two electric motors on an e-bike? Frankly said, it’s not that much different for everyday riding, but the e-bike came alive on gravel and sandy paths.
