The Surprising Health Benefits of an Electric Bike by Gretchen Reynolds. The New York Times, July 6, 2016. Electric bikes can encourage motorists back onto two wheels, with real benefits to their health.
Ebikes that look like motorcycles (such as Vespa style scooters with pedals) WILL get you pulled over. If it looks like it needs registration and tags…a cop will assume you are riding it illegally without them:
In this section, we see the requirements for drivers licences for various vehicles. The the one to take note of here is that if you operate as a “moped” (30-MPH) then you need not only a drivers license, but one with a motorcycle endorsement. But as a motorized bicycle, (20-MPH) you do not need any drivers license. You only need to be 16 years old for the “bike”.
An Electric Boost for Bicyclists by J. David Goodman. The New York Times, January 31, 2010. There are over 120 million electric bicycles in China, and now Chinese makers have got behind the technology, they are driving growth in other world markets.
Vintage Electric offers a few e-bike options for getting around California, and for its latest ride it has enlisted one the Golden State’s most iconic figures. The Jeff Clark Signature Cruz has the legend’s fingerprints all over it, and offers fellow surfers a stylish way to cruise to the beach.
In this chapter, it tells you how to operate the bicycle or in this case e-bicycle. In most cases, there is little variation in this area from state to state. All the usual stuff about having at least one hand on the handlebars, having a light at night, riding as far to the right as can be done safely, etc. In nearly all states, it will clearly state that bikes obey traffic laws, such as speed limits, stop signs etc. Just because you are allowed 20-MPH on the ebike you can’t ride though the 15-MPH school zone at 20-MPH. You’d think this would be pretty obvious, but far too many bike riders think that no license required means no laws apply. It’s not the case. But it’s true that cops may ignore your breaking the law on a bicycle. Or…they may not. Do you feel lucky?
Laws governing who can ride electric bikes, and where, vary from state to state. In some places, you can ride cycle paths; in others, you cannot. You may need a license – and even insurance – and there may be age limits.

“I used to whip around corners on horseback with the wind in my face,” said 27-year-old Marino, who lives in Torrance, California. “It hurt not to have that anymore; not to feel myself riding anything.”
Potholes, curbs and other urban obstacles are no problem for mountain bikes, which is why many people choose to commute on the things. It was with this in mind that the Billy was created. It’s a foldable e-bike that looks like a cross between a fatbike, a full-suspension mountain bike, and a BMX.
“The U.S. electric bicycle market is growing, and we see an opportunity for Yamaha to enter with our long history of power assist bicycle innovation,” said Rob Trester, a business development executive with the company. “Yamaha has been studying the market closely, and we see a strong growth trend.”
A lightweight, high speed, electric road bike with sturdy 12 mm thru-axle on the front wheel, Carbon fiber fork, and Alpha 200 Gold alloy frame to dampen vibration. Capable and comfortable on hard packed trails as a gravel grinder, sturdy Aluminum fenders and……
“You honestly feel like you’re floating,” said Marino, who found pedaling easy for his recovering leg. “I felt like I was riding horses again. Instead of trails, I was road biking in and out of traffic.”
I have put over 200 miles on my EVELO in the past few weeks. Nothing but fun. And more fun! After 25 miles on pedal assist I still have over half a battery charge left. Hills become flat. I have been riding on pavement, dirt roads, and trails in the forest. Riding a regular bike is quite a bit of work in hilly areas like where I live. My EVELO makes riding fun.

Now that sales are taking off, the vast majority of bike dealers are asking Cocalis when he’ll make an ebike available. Meanwhile, Pivot Cycles sells an ebike in Europe, and has its eye on the U.S. market.
The power system is easily capable of 28 mph (Class 3) top-end speed yet retains great hill climbing capability. Finally electric bikes can have enough performance to be true car replacement vehicles.
As a power electronics engineer I had intended designing and developing a torque assist bike so was surprised to find that a few manufacturers brought them out in Europe recently. I bought a Raleigh Vélo Cité with a 36V 10Ahr lithium battery. I would never use a throttle or cadence type unless I was infirm and I am sure that torque sensing pedelecs will become the norm as prices fall.
An approachable, mid-step, high-speed, urban electric bike with six levels of pedal assist plus throttle mode that can override with full power. Fairly comfortable with larger tires, a basic suspension fork, and cheap seat post shock… the……
We easily rode 30 e-bikes or more this year. Almost all of them impressed us one way or another. Some are expensive and others more affordable. As with most expensive e-bikes, you pay for the difference in quality and feel. But not all entry-level e-bikes have to feel like a cheesy attempt to convert a heavy regular bike with a battery pack and an electric motor.

While some companies are emphasizing the practical benefits of electric bikes — they’re good for your health, good for the planet and a low-cost way to get from here to there — others focus on fun and style. They are targeting urban buyers in their 20s and 30s, without a lot of money to spend, for whom the allure of owning a car has diminished.
If you’re sharing an e-bike in one household—for running errands or just for fun—the Elby Bike is a great fit, since it’s the only one-size-fits-all e-bike on the market, and its step-through design is claimed to be great for people from five feet to six-and-a-half feet tall. It’s not the snazziest-looking bike (though it’s available in a few different colors), but the robot-style accoutrements make up for the less-than-exciting exterior. A high intensity Super Nova lighting system provides outstanding visibility from the front and back of the bike, while a built-in rear carrier with an integrated fender handles most panniers or saddle bags and loads up to 40 pounds. And the Elby App is a great bonus; it can be used with iOS devices for additional functionality and control, including navigation and even phone charging.
Electric trikes have also been produced that conform to the e-bike legislation. These have the benefit of additional low speed stability and are often favored by people with disabilities. Cargo carrying tricycles are also gaining acceptance, with a small but growing number of couriers using them for package deliveries in city centres. Latest designs of these trikes resemble a cross-between a pedal cycle and a small van.
I am trying to get a e bike (jetson electric scooter) and I live in nj and I have been reading and most of the laws state that it must be registered and insured with Lisence. I was wondering why you would think that the federal law overights state law? I mean I hope it was but it is starting to seem like it isn’t. How do you know what this is true in nj? Thanks
An e-bike conforming to these conditions is considered to be a pedelec in the EU and is legally classed as a bicycle. The EN15194 standard is valid across the whole of the EU and has also been adopted by some non-EU European nations and also some jurisdictions outside of Europe (such as the state of Victoria in Australia).
Our E-Mountain Bikes give you the power to ride more trails. And with silent, pedal-assisted power to the pedals and proprietary technologies that would make a Silicon Valley engineer blush, we’re taking your trail rides to new heights…and more thrilling descents.
