Like electric cars, electric bikes are pricey. A basic e-bike can be had for as little as $499 on Amazon, but sturdy, well-designed models with better-quality batteries cost between $2,000 and $3,500. (Conventional bikes sell for an average of about $450 in speciality stores and about $100 in retailers like Walmart and Target where most bikes are sold.) Prices could come down as batteries and electric motors become more efficient, and economies of scale come into play. “The technology is getting better, rapidly,” says Dave Hurst of Navigant.
Now I will dig through some examples of state motor vehicle codes, to give an example of how to find and possibly understand the statutes, short of hiring a lawyer. In the examples, I give only my personal opinion of what the statutes mean.
We’ve seen a number of kits that allow cyclists to temporarily turn their existing bike into an e-bike, by swapping one of its wheels with an electrified one. It’s a pretty simple system, although the Swytch eBike Conversion Kit may be even simpler and easier yet.
Some power-on-demand only e-bikes can hardly be confused with, let alone categorised as, bicycles. For example, the Noped is a term used by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario for e-bikes which do not have pedals or in which the pedals have been removed from their motorised bicycle. These are better categorised as electric mopeds or electric motorcycles.
Built with durable e-bike rated components, the Archer is ready for trails and pot-holes. The oversized axles and adjustable suspension provide a confident feel as you race down the trails or streets.
Another type of electric assist motor, often referred to as the mid-drive system, is increasing in popularity. With this system, the electric motor is not built into the wheel but is usually mounted near (often under) the bottom bracket shell. In more typical configurations, a cog or wheel on the motor drives a belt or chain that engages with a pulley or sprocket fixed to one of the arms of the bicycle’s crankset. Thus the propulsion is provided at the pedals rather than at the wheel, being eventually applied to the wheel via the bicycle’s standard drive An electric mid-drive combined with a hub gear at the back hub may require care due to the lack of a clutch mechanism to soften the shock to the gears at the moment of re-engagement. A stepless / coninuous ratio gear hub or a fully automatic gear hub may reduce the chocks due to the viscosity of oils used for liquid coupling instead of the mechanical couplings of the conventional gear hubs.
If you’re sharing an e-bike in one household—for running errands or just for fun—the Elby Bike is a great fit, since it’s the only one-size-fits-all e-bike on the market, and its step-through design is claimed to be great for people from five feet to six-and-a-half feet tall. It’s not the snazziest-looking bike (though it’s available in a few different colors), but the robot-style accoutrements make up for the less-than-exciting exterior. A high intensity Super Nova lighting system provides outstanding visibility from the front and back of the bike, while a built-in rear carrier with an integrated fender handles most panniers or saddle bags and loads up to 40 pounds. And the Elby App is a great bonus; it can be used with iOS devices for additional functionality and control, including navigation and even phone charging.
Choose an electric bike from top brands like Razor, Monster Moto and Jetson, and your child will be burning rubber in no time! In sporty colors like yellow, green and red, your little rider can cruise in style at speeds of up to 15 mph. Adventures can usually last up to 40 minutes, or 10 miles, on a single battery charge. To ensure you get the right bike for your child, carefully examine the age and weight restrictions of your new electric bike.
This all-black e-bike looks futuristic in design, from the handlebars to the Shimano Alfine drivetrain, and its tech is pretty far ahead, too. This Contro-E has Cannondale’s classic Lefty fork (a rigid one) and 2.35-inch Schwalbe tires hefty enough to do urban battle with potholes and the occasional shards of glass. Full front and rear fenders make it a rainy day machine, and a Bosch engine gives you a bit of boost when your morning coffee hasn’t yet kicked in during your commute.

[…] e-bikes started appearing and so the NYPD treated any e-bike as illegal regardless if it was a pedal-assist or throttle e-bike. In recent years, the NYPD has been largely ignoring pedal-assist e-bikes while targeting […]
If you’re going for a full-time electric bike, the distance you travel on a single charge will be reduced considerably, though it’s difficult to offer precise figures. Manufacturers will quote anywhere from 20 to 40 miles while simultaneously using phrases like “in ideal conditions.”
In response to customer questions about the display, we posted a video detailing the basic setup of the LCD during installation of the kit. You will need to adjust the settings for the motor type, wheel size, and battery voltage in order to match your specific kit. Detailed instructions are available in the E-BikeKit manual, E-TrikeKit manual and LCD Quickstart Guide
Batteries: Battery packs can be fitted in all kinds of different positions, but often, they are fixed to a rack behind the rider. If you plan on carrying anything, this configuration could be problematic.
Locks in any speed below 20 mph. Speed will be maintained without pedaling or using the throttle until: the brake is applied, pushing any button or giving additional throttle input. Pedaling can increase the speed, but the e-bike will return to the pre-set speed if pedaling stops.

A letter from Casey Evans to Electric Bike Technologies, makers of the E-BikeKit™ electric bike conversion kit system. The term “pedelec” (from pedal electric cycle) refers to an e-bike where the pedal-assist electric drive system is limited to a decent but not excessive top speed, and where its motor is relatively low-powered. Pedelecs are legally classed as bicycles rather than low-powered motorcycles or mopeds.
The majority of folks can’t even recognize an ebike…and if you don’t advertise it, you can ride everywhere…I do…parks…trails…even paths that say no motorized vehicles…but I use courtesy and respect and ride within limits of the path…until I get out of sight…

Globally, electric bicycles outsell electric cars by a wide margin. An estimated 29.3 million e-bicycles were sold in 2012, with perhaps 90 percent of those selling in China, which has more electric bikes than cars on its roads. E-bicycles are popular in Europe, too, selling about 380,000 a year in Germany and 175,000 in the Netherlands in 2012. By comparison, about 120,000 electric cars were sold worldwide.

Electric Bike Conversion Kits are prepackaged sets of components designed to fit on a normal bike and convert it into an Electric Bike. These kits make it easier for end-users to find compatible, functioning parts and purchase them all together. A kit can range from a complete system that includes all the small parts you need, to DIY kits that include only a few parts and leave the rest up to the user.
Riding my Stromer on Minneapolis bike trails for the past month has been a blast. And, nobody has a clue what I’m riding. Of course, I’m careful to call “on your left” with every high speed pass. But, I’m dreading the possibility of “no motor-assist bicycles” signs going up once people do figure out what’s going on.
In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead, student survivors have started a movement for greater gun control.
