Maybe you merely have to pedal without the motor to be legal on that trail. Or maybe you just have to ride slow. Maybe if you look just like a gasoline scooter, nice little old ladies start throwing rocks at you. It can be quite peculiar at the local level. One day, I nearly got in a fist fight with 30 jogging body-builders that decided my e-bike was not allowed on the trail. They thought ALL bikes were not allowed. Some days you just have to bend to the local peculiarity of that day. That day, I got off the path, and got back on again once I was out of their sight.
“This is the beginning of a multi-year shift away from regular pedal to electric bikes,” Jump Bikes CEO Ryan Rzepecki told CNN Tech. “When people first jump on an ebike, their face lights up. It’s exciting and joyful in a way that you don’t get from a regular bike.”
Some assembly of your new electric bike may be required. Often, this merely involves attaching the front wheel, but assembly chores are sometimes more complex than that. Several manufacturers provide instructional videos to help owners with the task of e-bike assembly.

The Easy Motion Big Bud Pro left a fun impression on us. What’s not to like about those chubby fat tires with two electric motors, one in the back and front? Sporting a 350W electric motor in the back and 250W on the front wheel, this was one fun bike to ride. Why two electric motors on an e-bike? Frankly said, it’s not that much different for everyday riding, but the e-bike came alive on gravel and sandy paths. With pedal-assist the electric motor is regulated by pedalling. The pedal-assist augments the efforts of the rider when they are pedalling. These e-bikes – called pedelecs – have a sensor to detect the pedalling speed, the pedalling force, or both. Brake activation is sensed to disable the motor as well.

The oldest patent for an electric bike I’ve been able to find at the US Patent and Trademark Office is this one, by Ogden Bolton, Jr. of Canton Ohio, which was filed in September 1895 and granted three months later. You can see from these original diagrams that it bears an amazingly close resemblance to modern electric bikes. In the general picture on the left, you can see there’s a hub motor on the rear wheel (blue), a battery suspended from the frame (red), and a simple handlebar control to make the thing stop and go. In the more detailed cutaway of the hub motor on the right, you can see there’s a six-pole magnet in the center (orange) bolted to the frame and an armature (made from coiled wire, yellow) that rotates around it when the current is switched on. It’s quite a hefty motor even by modern standards; Ogdon mentions “a heavy current at low voltage—for instance, to carry one hundred amperes at ten volts.” So that’s 1000 watts, which is about twice the power of a typical modern bike hub motor.
Lower the voltage. Depending on the battery, the first block or two of riding might do the trick. If your battery drops voltage fast, you might be a lot slower than 20-MPH for 98% of your ride. I’d call that close enough if that is the case. Or maybe I can just charge my battery a lower voltage. Maybe if I charge it to 40 volts instead of the normal 42V-44V, I won’t be quite so fast. That could work if my battery still gets me going 23-MPH for too long to fudge it.
Electric bikes offer the chance for those with low lung capacity (asthma sufferers, for example), or a reduced fitness level to get out and enjoy the countryside. Even those who are moderately fit can appreciate some assistance when going up hills.

We easily rode 30 e-bikes or more this year. Almost all of them impressed us one way or another. Some are expensive and others more affordable. As with most expensive e-bikes, you pay for the difference in quality and feel. But not all entry-level e-bikes have to feel like a cheesy attempt to convert a heavy regular bike with a battery pack and an electric motor.

In a friction drive motor, a small, solid wheel rotates against the side of the tire in order to drive it. The first motorcycles used the same concept, with a motor mounted above the front wheel. The problem is that the drive rubs at the side of the tire. It’s inefficient, and it quickly wears the sidewall away. Tires need to be replaced every couple hundred miles. For this reason, you’ll seldom see electric bikes with this type of drive anymore.

As is always is the case with companies that launch products on Indiegogo, there’s a chance those things never happen. But if you’re in love with the idea and don’t particularly want to roll the dice on a startup, there are plenty of similarly priced portable batteries and solar panels already available on the market, and an abundance of e-bikes at or under Kvaern’s price tag. You might have to do a little comparison shopping if you want to find something that matches the Copenhagen startup’s style, but you’ll certainly be able to ride the sun’s rays a lot sooner.
