I have a pedelec and love it. I have three bikes, and I want to pedal, but when I have a meeting at night that is 7 miles away, I take the e-bike. It is enough of a boost to keep me from wanting to take the car at the end of a long day. It’s fun. Also, the laws on e-bikes continue to change, but it looks like the pedelecs will be classified as bikes, whereas bikes with throttles or self-propelled speeds of more than 20 mph are starting to become classified as “motor” vehicles and requiring registration in some states.

The Stromer ST1 Platinum may look less decked out than the other models, but this e-bike is pretty high-tech. It looks like something a Storm Trooper might pilot and has a futuristic computer readout to go with it—showing speed, odometer, trip time, and battery level, among other things. The battery is built into the down tube, and the speed tops out at 28 miles per hour. It also has fender and rack mounts if you want to make it a great commuter bike in the winter and can go up to 55 miles on a single charge.

Four prototype bikes, shown at the annual Interbike cycling convention that opened today in Las Vegas, will be offered to retailers. The production models will wear the traditional Yamaha tuning fork emblem, which harkens back to the company’s roots in musical instruments.
With clear rules on how and where to ride an e-bike, everyone stands to benefit. Local bicycle shops and manufacturers will see increased business and their customers will no longer be confused; people who already ride e-bikes can more easily understand where to ride; and new bicyclists who may be discouraged from riding a traditional bicycle due to limited physical fitness, age, disability or convenience will have new transportation alternatives.
Something else. If you think your personal injury insurance covers power assist bikes, better check. Insurance companies are notorious bandits, claiming e-bikes are motorized vehicles (despite the federal definition). Bicycle shops have wanted to carry our e-bikes but told by their liability insurance they cannot (State Farm is an example). If your bike is stolen, burned up or damaged in a flood, unlike a non-powered bike it likely won’t be covered by your homeowner’s insurance…again due to their definition of motorized vehicle).

Like electric cars, electric bikes are pricey. A basic e-bike can be had for as little as $499 on Amazon, but sturdy, well-designed models with better-quality batteries cost between $2,000 and $3,500. (Conventional bikes sell for an average of about $450 in speciality stores and about $100 in retailers like Walmart and Target where most bikes are sold.) Prices could come down as batteries and electric motors become more efficient, and economies of scale come into play. “The technology is getting better, rapidly,” says Dave Hurst of Navigant.
Does any of this matter? That’s a valid question. Where I ride, the cops sure do ignore me. If your local cops don’t care, why should you? I can’t say if you should care or not, but I can say you should at least know if you are legal or illegal. You should not ride any different either way, but it’s always good to know where you stand.
In the theoretical electric bike we considered up above, we had the dynamo/motor driving the back wheel directly, simply by pressing on the tire. Most electric bikes work a different way. They have compact electric motors built into the hub of the back or front wheel (or mounted in the center of the bike and connected to the pedal sprocket). Take a look at the hub of an electric bike and probably you’ll see it’s much fatter and bulkier than on a normal bike.
