In terms of how far you can go, there’s a big difference between a pedelec (pedal-assisted electric bike) and full-time electric bike. If you’re prepared to pedal and only need help on hills, you could get anywhere from 50 to 100 miles on a single charge with the former.

So your motor is limited to a peak of 1490 watts. This is where you have to be careful as a number of e-bike motors are sold not at peak rating but at their sustainable rate. That 1000w rated motor might actually be capable of 2000w and be a violation.

Is my e-bike a bicycle?  It has two tandem wheels, that is, the wheels are one in front of the other, not side by side. It can be propelled by human power.  The question here is, does the law mean propelled only by human power?  It is a bit vague about that, but it does not specifically say, “cannot have a motor” either.  Hmm, maybe another definition will fit my e-bike better.  Lets read some more.

I’ve had an ebike kit on my old mountain bike for over five years. It is frontwheeldrive, with a thumb throttle and regeneration button for downhill recharge. I’ve ridden pedelecs and, on the whole, don’t like them. find it annoying to have to adjust power assist, and it can be quite alarming/dangerous if on high assist when you pedal off, and you get too great a boost. The thumb throttle is sensitive, easy to adapt to all conditions, works in well with how hard you want to pedal(I never ride mine without pedaling) and i swear by the regen button for both braking and battery recharge. you can overcome the aching thumb/wrist syndrome on a longer ride by setting the thumb throttle on right hand handlebar so your thumb naturally pushes it away from you. And, it’s simple.

The last e-bike component we’re going to discuss is the throttle. A few e-bikes use levers much like you’d find on some lawn mowers. Some just have a button, but most use motorcycle-style twist grips. These give a positive feel and more precise control.

Though rear-wheel versions are available, most e-bike conversion kits are for the front wheel. They are easier to fit. However, they do change the balance of the bike, and brakes should also be uprated to cope with the additional weight. We’re not aware of any front hub motors on purpose-built electric bikes.

Riding my Stromer on Minneapolis bike trails for the past month has been a blast. And, nobody has a clue what I’m riding. Of course, I’m careful to call “on your left” with every high speed pass. We are regular riders and chose to ride e-bikes and felt it was the best decision we could have made. Because of the size of the group there were extra e-bikes available and three others in the group switched after day one. The e-bike made the uphills no more challenging than our rides back in New England. The long switchback filled downhills were a total delight as the BionX system allows you to shift into negative power and like a car in first gear, holds you back with minimal braking. HR-727 (Passed by the 107th Congress) defines what a “low speed electric bicycle” is.
