Does a decades-long rise in suicide among white Americans signal an emerging crisis for U.S. capitalism and democracy? Nobel Prize-winning economist Angus Deaton and his wife, fellow Princeton Prof. Anne Case, share their provocative theory with WSJ’s Jason Bellini in this episode of Moving Upstream. Photo: Getty
Various designs (including those mentioned above) are designed to fit inside most area laws, and the ones that contain pedals can be used on roads in the United Kingdom, among other countries.
I have a pedelec and love it. I have three bikes, and I want to pedal, but when I have a meeting at night that is 7 miles away, I take the e-bike. It is enough of a boost to keep me from wanting to take the car at the end of a long day. It’s fun. Also, the laws on e-bikes continue to change, but it looks like the pedelecs will be classified as bikes, whereas bikes with throttles or self-propelled speeds of more than 20 mph are starting to become classified as “motor” vehicles and requiring registration in some states.
Maintenance tasks for an e-bike – chain tension adjustments, brake adjustments – are often the same as they are for ordinary bicycles. You can probably handle these tasks yourself. When it comes to battery and motor maintenance, however, we recommend using an expert.
A lot of pedal assist bikes have different levels of assistance, for example: low, medium, or high assist. Please note that some e-bikes have 4 or 5 pedal assist settings, but for this example we will just stick with low, medium, and high.

The two most common types of hub motors used in electric bicycles are brushed and brushless. There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. BLDC hub motors are a common modern design with the motor built into the wheel hub itself and the stator fixed solidly to the axle and the magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The bicycle wheel hub is the motor. The power levels motors used are influenced by available legal categories and are often, but not always limited to under 750 watts.
Older Americans, especially those 65+ are the real drivers of electric bike adoption in the United States. Betty and Grady Smith of Beaumont Texas may not know it but they are the driving demographic for electric bicycles and tricycles. Both in thier eighties, the couple enjoys riding thier Worksman electric side-by-side tricycle around town. As a business offering electric bike and trike conversion systems since 2008, we’ve gotten to know…
so by simply gearing down ones electric bike and then spinning fairly fast also as well with half the pressure on ones pedals for example; the corresponding electric motor assist will also be reduced to ones electric bike; this will help to improve, preserve and optimize the electric bike batteries range in miles.
A step-thru urban electric bike that hits a sweet spot between cruiser comfort and city efficiency performance, adjustable angle stem, locking suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes. The bike comes with fenders, a sturdy oversized rack (with standard gauge pannier rods), integrated……
Electric bicycles are already popular in Europe and in China, which has more e-bikes than cars on its roads. Now, manufacturers are marketing e-bikes in the U.S., promoting them as a “green” alternative to driving.
