The Smart Motion Catalyst is an e-bike we enjoyed riding. It had the right feel for under $3,000. It is a high-speed trail e-bike with cadence and torque sensing assist options. For a lawyer, you didn’t get what the federal law states. The federal law overrides all state laws and defines an e-bike as a bicycle. According to the New Jersey state MVO, e-bikes must be registered but they can’t be registered because they do not meet federal safety standards for motor vehicles – not on the list of approved motorcycles. The federal law overrides these anal idiots. E-bikes that meet the federal definition of an e-bike, are bicycles in all states. This is the entire purpose of the federal law! To prevent anal bureaucracy states from stopping the sale and use of these environmentally friendly e-bikes.

This is truly the most fashionable of the e-bikes we’ve assembled. For a hipster-stylized, commuter workhorse, the Faraday Porteur is hard to beat. It’s fairly inexpensive—for an e-bike—at $3,499, looks sleek and streamlined, and rides smoothly. Perhaps best of all, it doesn’t look like a traditional e-bike: Instead, it appears to be a singlespeed, although it features an internal eight-speed hub and a Gates belt drive for stealthy shifting. It’s an excellent commuter bike because it’s easy enough to pedal without the e-assist, but with it, you’ll zoom along without breaking a sweat. If price is an issue, check out some of the more budget-friendly options like the Porteur S, which starts at $2,800.

Baby boomers are an obvious market for electric bicycles. “We’re seeing an aging population, and a growing number of people getting back into cycling,” says Bill Moore, an Internet publisher who recently launched ePEDALER, an electric-assist bicycle retailer. Urbanization will be another driver of electric bike sales, Moore said, as will the obesity crisis, rising health care costs, and the desires of employers to encourage their workers to become more active.

The last e-bike component we’re going to discuss is the throttle. A few e-bikes use levers much like you’d find on some lawn mowers. Some just have a button, but most use motorcycle-style twist grips. These give a positive feel and more precise control.

The two most common types of hub motors used in electric bicycles are brushed and brushless. There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. BLDC hub motors are a common modern design with the motor built into the wheel hub itself and the stator fixed solidly to the axle and the magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The bicycle wheel hub is the motor. The power levels of motors used are influenced by available legal categories and are often, but not always limited to under 750 watts.

Maybe you merely have to pedal without the motor to be legal on that trail. Or maybe you just have to ride slow.  Maybe if you look just like a gasoline scooter, nice little old ladies start throwing rocks at you.  It can be quite peculiar at the local level. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries, electric motors and some form of control. Battery systems in use include sealed lead-acid (SLA), nickel-cadmium (NiCad), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium-ion polymer (Li-ion). Batteries vary according to the voltage, total charge capacity (amp hours), weight, the number of charging cycles before performance degrades, and ability to handle over-voltage charging conditions. The energy costs of operating e-bikes are small, but there can be considerable battery replacement costs. The lifespan of a battery pack varies depending on the type of usage. Shallow discharge/recharge cycles will help extend the overall battery life.

Lithium-ion polymer batteries have the same electrical properties as standard Li-ion batteries, but the material can be shaped more easily. There’s the potential for some interesting designs, though we’ve yet to see them.

Though they’re pedal assist, a e-bike can still give you a workout, improving your cardiovascular health, fitness, and aerobic capacity. The results were most prevalent in previously sedentary riders.
