“It’s happening in every major city, and a lot of secondary cities around the country, and it’s causing people to think differently about getting around on two wheels,” says Pizzi. “If you don’t have safe infrastructure, people don’t feel as if biking is safe and secure.”

In a friction drive motor, a small, solid wheel rotates against the side of the tire in order to drive it. The first motorcycles used the same concept, with a motor mounted above the front wheel. The problem is that the drive rubs at the side of the tire. It’s inefficient, and it quickly wears the sidewall away. Tires need to be replaced every couple hundred miles. For this reason, you’ll seldom see electric bikes with this type of drive anymore.

Torque is a consideration, but actual figures are rarely quoted by makers. Owners will frequently comment on whether their electric bike offers plenty of torque or lacks it, but these comments need to be taken in context. Road conditions, as well as the weight of the rider, have a big impact.

Utility meets comfort in the new Townie® Commute Go! powered by the Bosch Performance System offering four levels of power support from Eco to Turbo mode. There’s your answer right there. There is already a deterrent to running a stop sign. It’s called civil procedure[ie. being sued]. The only thing legislation does is to make the government a party in a civil matter. The government has no business in the matter.

We chose this trip for the wonderful locale AND the e-bikes. They were liberating. You still have to pedal, but the bike gives you an extra boost to get up the rolling hills. This leveled the playing field for us, so we could keep up with younger, more experienced cyclists and get our full share of joy in biking the wine country. The e-bikes — and our outstanding guides — enabled us to take a full measure of pride in cycling more than 160 miles in 6 days, our biggest trip ever.

Foldability: Not all folding e-bikes are small. Some full-size electric bikes with standard 26-inch or 27.5-inch wheels can be folded to fit into compact spaces. Make sure you’re aware of a folding bike’s weight before you buy it, though. “Foldable” doesn’t always mean light.

This article first appeared in Electric Bike Report in June of 2013. Since then, we’ve made some changes to our motor selection – our Direct-Drive motors are now all High-Torque 6×9 wound, so they run slower (approximately 15mph at 36v or 20mph at 48v), and our Geared Motors have been replaced by a 500w version, (approximately 20mph at 36v or 28mph at 48v). The Direct-Drive is now our Heavy-Duty motor and the…

Electric Bike Parts, what fits my older electric bike? What can I modify to fit my bike? A brief overview of what electric bike parts do, and how generic electric bike parts can be adapted to your bike. The Plugs, Wires & Connectors Hardly a day goes by without a call that goes about like this; “I have a (whatever) electric bike that I used to ride 6 years ago….

Electric Mountain Bikes- Just like traditional mountain bikes, these are meant to be ridden on rough and hilly terrains. They are more powerful than city e-bikes, and this enables the bikes to go over rocks and other obstacles on the trail safely.

E-bicycle makers eagerly market themselves as “green.” Dashboards on e-bicycles sold under the Polaris brand and made by a Miami-based company called EVantage include a “carbon footprint savings” function to calculate how many pounds of CO2 are saved by using the bicycle in place of a gasoline-powered car. Evelo, a Boston-based startup, recently launched a 30-day electric bike challenge, asking people to give up their car keys and blog about using their electric bikes. “We don’t want to wean people from bicycles,” says Boris Mordkovich, Evelo’s founder, who previously worked at car-sharing company RelayRides. “We want to wean people from cars.”

Finally we are getting somewhere.  I have a bicycle, check.  It has an electric motor, check. I weighed it, and it was 80 pounds, check.  When I rode it, it went 23-MPH.  Whoops!  “Cannot attain a speed of more than 20-MPH”

In full-electric mode, the Pedego City Commuter Classic Electric Bike is capable of moving at up to 20 mph for anywhere from 15 to 30 miles. There are two further options: power-assisted pedaling or fully “unplugged” riding. Renowned Shimano gears are easy to select. Seldom do we come across a product so universally praised by owners. It’s not cheap, but comments like “Everything I hoped for!” and “Outstanding!” tell us that it’s money well spent.

Speaking of Liveforphysics, riding like a hooligan can quickly get you in trouble if you ride past the police in a provocative manner. Manuevers such as the one pictured above should only be used off the road ways.   Use a lot of common sense. If you are moving fast it is a good idea to be pedaling fast so you appear like you are just an athletic bicycle rider.

The part that confuses me is the “saddle”. Recumbent trikes do not have the typical bicycle saddle seat. They have a nice comfy fully supportive seat. Some are like bucket seats. So then I’m thinking, would it be a moped under WA law?

A 2008 market survey showed that the average distance traveled in the Netherlands by commuters on a standard bicycle is 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) while with an e-bike this distance increases to 9.8 kilometres (6.1 mi).[76] This survey also showed that e-bike ownership is particularly popular among people aged 65 and over, but limited among commuters. The e-bike is used in particular for recreational bicycle trips, shopping and errands.[76]

The GeoOrbital Wheel Lets You Make Your Bike Electric in Minutes by Philip E. Ross. IEEE Spectrum, April 26, 2016. GeoOrbital’s crowd-funded pedal-assist wheel promises to “make your bike electric in 60 seconds.”

Last year we heard about the Draisine 200.0, a one-off wooden electric balance bike for adults. Well, if you wished that you could buy something like it, now is your chance. The Big Buddy Bike has a tempered wooden frame, it’s adult-sized, and it’s an electric balance bike – of a sort.

The Jetson Adventure is a good e-bike for those looking for a sportier light e-bike under $2,000. Finally, our heart-win is the Propella e-bike, designed by a bunch of cool designers and engineers. They nailed it in terms of looks, feel, and performance for a very reasonable price.

We easily rode 30 e-bikes or more this year. Almost all of them impressed us one way or another. Some are expensive and others more affordable. As with most expensive e-bikes, you pay for the difference in quality and feel. But not all entry-level e-bikes have to feel like a cheesy attempt to convert a heavy regular bike with a battery pack and an electric motor.

This is the display of the Easy Motion Neo Jumper electric mountain bike.  The pedal assist settings can be adjusted up or down using the + or – buttons on the left side of the display.  In this picture the pedal assist is set to the highest level; see the right side of the display.
