The Jetson Adventure was a very pleasant surprise because we really didn’t know what to expect. Instead, we found a light and fun mountain bike and had no problem flinging into corners with ease. The one caveat is that its battery is not removable, at least, not easily. It can be removed from the front light but would take some time to do so. It sports 21 gears, and although we would like to go faster, it is meant to climb hills. Overall, it’s a fun bike to ride, and one that is lightweight at a fair price.
The situation in New York State is not as bleak as you imply. New York State has yet to define what an electric bike is, so in the meantime the federal definition applies (an ebike goes less than with less than 750 watts of power). The federal definition says that any bicycle within these specifications is not a “motor vehicle” or a “motorized vehicle” or a “motorized bicycle”; it is essentially a bicycle. Only state laws for bicycles apply. This makes sense: the intent of the federal law was to define a reasonable speed and power for ebikes that isn’t significantly different from human power. We’re talking about a vehicle that by definition is not capable of behaving significantly differently than a human-powered bicycle, so it should have the same benefits and restrictions as a human-powered bicycle. States like New York State that simply don’t define ebikes don’t have a basis for restricting them, except by referring to the federal law. It may be that this very clear idea needs to be tested in court, or it may be that Albany comes to its senses and passes a legal definition of ebikes similar to the Federal definition.

Depending on local laws, many e-bikes (e.g., pedelecs) are legally classified as bicycles rather than mopeds or motorcycles, so they are not subject to the more stringent laws regarding their certification and operation, unlike the more powerful two-wheelers which are often classed as electric motorcycles. E-bikes can also be defined separately and treated as a specific vehicle type in many areas of legal jurisdiction.

The oldest patent for an electric bike I’ve been able to find at the US Patent and Trademark Office is this one, by Ogden Bolton, Jr. of Canton Ohio, which was filed in September 1895 and granted three months later. You can see from these original diagrams that it bears an amazingly close resemblance to modern electric bikes. In the general picture on the left, you can see there’s a hub motor on the rear wheel (blue), a battery suspended from the frame (red), and a simple handlebar control to make the thing stop and go. In the more detailed cutaway of the hub motor on the right, you can see there’s a six-pole magnet in the center (orange) bolted to the frame and an armature (made from coiled wire, yellow) that rotates around it when the current is switched on. It’s quite a hefty motor even by modern standards; Ogdon mentions “a heavy current at low voltage—for instance, to carry one hundred amperes at ten volts.” So that’s 1000 watts, which is about twice the power of a typical modern bike hub motor.

An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, powerbike or booster bike, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion. Many kinds of e-bikes are available worldwide, from e-bikes that only have a small motor to assist the rider’s pedal-power (i.e., pedelecs) to somewhat more powerful e-bikes which tend closer to moped-style functionality: all, however, retain the ability to be pedalled by the rider and are therefore not electric motorcycles. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and the lighter varieties can travel up to 25 to 32 km/h (16 to 20 mph), depending on the laws of the country in which they are sold, while the more high-powered varieties can often do in excess of 45 km/h (28 mph). In some markets, such as Germany, they are gaining in popularity and taking some market share away from conventional bicycles, while in others, such as China, they are replacing fossil fuel-powered mopeds and small motorcycles.

The batteries are the most important parts of the bike, because (if you don’t do any pedaling) they contain all the power that will drive you along. Typical electric bike batteries make about 350–500 W of power (that’s about 35–50 volts and 10 amps), which is about a quarter as much as you need to drive an electric toaster. In theory, you could use any kind of battery on a bicycle. In practice, however, you want to use something that stores lots of power without being too heavy—or you’ll be using half your power just moving the battery along! That tends to rule out heavy lead-acid batteries like the ones that start cars, though some electric bikes do use them. Lightweight lithium-ion batteries, similar to those used in laptop computers, mobile (cellular) phones, and MP3 players, are now the most popular choice, though they’re more expensive than older rechargeable battery technologies such as nickel-cadmium (“nicad”). Typical batteries will give your bicycle a range of 10–40 miles between charges (depending on the terrain) and a top speed of 10–20 mph (which is about the maximum most countries allow for these vehicles by law). You can extend the range by pedaling or free-wheeling some of the time.
