There’s no question that electric bikes are far better for the environment than petrol-powered car engines. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely perfect. Making and disposing of batteries can be very polluting. Not only that, but an electric bicycle is still using energy that has to come from somewhere. You may think you’re using clean green power, but the electricity you use for getting about might have come from a filthy old, coal-fired power plant or one driven by nuclear energy. (If you’re lucky, of course, it might have come from solar panels or a wind turbine!) Electric bikes are nowhere near as environmentally friendly as ordinary push bikes, but nothing is ever perfect—and, as people often say, “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Electric bikes are certainly a step in the right direction. If everyone used them to get about instead of cars, global warming might be less of a problem, and the world would be a far cleaner and healthier place!

Something else. If you think your personal injury insurance covers power assist bikes, better check. Insurance companies are notorious bandits, claiming e-bikes are motorized vehicles (despite the federal definition). Bicycle shops have wanted to carry our e-bikes but told by their liability insurance they cannot (State Farm is an example). If your bike is stolen, burned up or damaged in a flood, unlike a non-powered bike it likely won’t be covered by your homeowner’s insurance…again due to their definition of motorized vehicle).

The time or distance an electric bike battery will run between chargings is impossible to judge with much accuracy. There are too many variables: terrain, speed, rider weight, bike load (shopping, kids, luggage), and more. However, we can make a few generalizations about an e-bike’s recharge time and overall working life. These generalizations should be used for comparison purposes only.

Power-assist: Also known as pedal-assist bikes, these are the bicycle equivalents of hybrid cars: they’re designed to be pedaled quite a lot of the time and electrically powered either when you’re tired or when you feel like a bit of electric help (when you’re going up hill, for example). Unlike full-power bikes, they don’t have hub motors; instead, there’s a separate electric motor mounted near the rear wheel and driving it either through the gear sprocket or simply by pressing against the rear tire. Where a hub motor is difficult or impossible to pedal without any power (because you’re effectively turning it into a generator), power-assist motors turn easily with little or no resistance when you pedal. That gives power-assist bikes much greater range than hub-motor ones (as much as 80–145km or 50–90 miles).

An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, powerbike or booster bike, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion. Even in Ohio, the laws between federal, state, and local on electric bicycles are a joke. I have a 100% tao tao electric power assisted bicycle and I have been ticketed in both Cleveland and Lakewood, where I live. Here is a picture of my electric bicycle and this has bicycle pedals.

By 1898 a rear-wheel drive electric bicycle, which used a driving belt along the outside edge of the wheel, was patented by Mathew J. Steffens. Also, the 1899 U.S. Patent 627,066 by John Schnepf depicted a rear-wheel friction “roller-wheel” style drive electric bicycle.[7] Schnepf’s invention was later re-examined and expanded in 1969 by G.A. You might want to take a quick look at Wikipedia for a quick overview of the e-bike laws in various states, and in countries other than the USA. Bear in mind, “you can’t lie on the internet” LOL.  The summaries of the laws on the wiki are just your starting point, to get an idea what your states attitude to e-bikes is. Many other sites have edited versions of your local laws,  and many of them will be incomplete. They may not mention things like use of a helmet, needing a registration, etc.

On our trip we experienced beautiful country roads going through and around small medieval Spanish villages. The e-bike was terrific. I felt somewhat guilty enjoying the slight uphills which were a breeze. It’s possible to break a sweat or not on this trip with an e-bike.

I’ve had an ebike kit on my old mountain bike for over five years. It is frontwheeldrive, with a thumb throttle and regeneration button for downhill recharge. I’ve ridden pedelecs and, on the whole, don’t like them. find it annoying to have to adjust power assist, and it can be quite alarming/dangerous if on high assist when you pedal off, and you get too great a boost. The thumb throttle is sensitive, easy to adapt to all conditions, works in well with how hard you want to pedal(I never ride mine without pedaling) and i swear by the regen button for both braking and battery recharge. you can overcome the aching thumb/wrist syndrome on a longer ride by setting the thumb throttle on right hand handlebar so your thumb naturally pushes it away from you. And, it’s simple.

The situation in New York State is not as bleak as you imply. New York State has yet to define what an electric bike is, so in the meantime the federal definition applies (an ebike goes less than 20mph, with less than 750 watts of power). The federal definition says that any bicycle within these specifications is not a “motor vehicle” or a “motorized vehicle” or a “motorized bicycle”; it is essentially a bicycle. Only state laws for bicycles apply. This makes sense: the intent of the federal law was to define a reasonable speed and power for ebikes that isn’t significantly different from human power. We’re talking about a vehicle that by definition is not capable of behaving significantly differently than a human-powered bicycle, so it should have the same benefits and restrictions as a human-powered bicycle. States like New York State that simply don’t define ebikes don’t have a basis for restricting them, except by referring to the federal law. It may be that this very clear idea needs to be tested in court, or it may be that Albany comes to its senses and passes a legal definition of ebikes similar to the Federal definition.

You ARE allowed to ride an e-bike in Texas faster than 20-MPH if you pedal up that speed.  So when you are going fast and see a cop, pedal as fast as you can.  We call it clown pedaling. Looks really clownish if you happen to be going 40-MPH. Don’t expect a cop to be fooled if your e-bike really goes 40-MPH…but sometimes cops can surprise you.

Pedelecs are pointless. Most people who buy electric bikes want to cruise on electric and pedal just a little. Plus you can keep up with traffic better with throttle and more speed. Its actually dafer for you. Some pedelecs you never know when the darn motor will kick in. The pedelec sensor fails often. Its a nightmare for ebike companies to fix!

eBay determines trending price through a machine learned model of the product’s sale prices within the last 90 days. “New” refers to a brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item, and “Used” refers to an item that has been used previously.

Though rear-wheel versions are available, most e-bike conversion kits are for the front wheel. They are easier to fit. However, they do change the balance of the bike, and brakes should also be uprated to cope with the additional weight. We’re not aware of any front hub motors on purpose-built electric bikes.

There’s your answer right there. There is already a deterrent to running a stop sign. It’s called civil procedure[ie. being sued]. The only thing legislation does is to make the government a party in a civil matter. The government has no business in the matter.

In the USA, it can get very confusing to understand what is legal and what is not, with an electric bicycle. Part of the confusion is caused by the Federal law, which has often been quoted by people selling electric bikes.  To begin with, this federal definition applies only to selling an e-bike.  As a retailer, it matters to your insurance company whether you are selling a “bike”, a “motorcycle”, or some vaguely defined toy.

I have a pedelec and love it. I have three and I want to pedal, but when I have a meeting at night that is 7 miles away, I take the e-bike. It is enough of a boost to keep me from wanting to take the car at the end of a long day. It’s fun. Also, the laws on e-bikes continue to change, but it looks like the pedelecs will be classified as bikes, whereas bikes with throttles or self-propelled speeds of more than 20 mph are starting to become classified as “motor” vehicles and requiring registration in some states.
