Some answers to the question customers are now asking most frequently. At Seattle Electric Bike, we have been celebrating the emergence of mid-drive motor systems onto the electric bike scene due to their unique responsiveness for on-demand power and torque.

Both land management regulators and mountain bike trail access advocates have argued for bans of electric bicycles on outdoor trails that are accessible to mountain bikes, citing potential safety hazards as well as the potential for electric bikes to damage trails. A study conducted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, however, found that the physical impacts of low-powered pedal-assist electric mountain bikes may be similar to traditional mountain bikes.[65]

Chart: Electric bicycles are rapidly becoming popular. This chart shows the growth in sales of what the manufacturers refer to as “electric power-assisted cycles (EPACs)” in European countries over the last decade. Over 1.6 million electric bikes were sold in Europe in 2016 alone, which is about 7 percent of total European bicycle sales. What this chart doesn’t reveal is that the bikes are much more popular in some countries than others: four countries accounted for 70 percent of all the sales (Germany, 36 percent; the Netherlands, 16 percent; Belgium, 10 percent; and France 8 percent). Maybe you merely have to pedal without the motor to be legal on that trail. Or maybe you just have to ride slow.  Maybe if you look just like a gasoline scooter, nice little old ladies start throwing rocks at you.  It can be quite peculiar at the local level. One day, I nearly got in a fist fight with 30 jogging body-builders that decided my e-bike was not allowed on the trail. They thought ALL bikes were not allowed. Some days you just have to bend to the local peculiarity of that day.  That day, I got off the path, and got back on again once I was out of their sight.

South Korea’s women’s curling team, known as the “Garlic Girls,” became the unexpected stars of the Olympics by reaching the finals. WSJ visited their garlic-producing hometown to understand an improbable curling craze that will be remembered far beyond the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

This article seems incorrect. I have read the HR-727 and can’t seem to find anywhere that states the 750 watt 20 MPH limit is only for people selling ebikes. The way it is written seems to imply the law is for riding ebikes.

The oldest patent for an electric bike I’ve been able to find at the US Patent and Trademark Office is this one, by Ogden Bolton, Jr. of Canton Ohio, which was filed in September 1895 and granted three months later. You can see from these original diagrams that it bears an amazingly close resemblance to modern electric bikes. In the general picture on the left, you can see there’s a hub motor on the rear wheel (blue), a battery suspended from the frame (red), and a simple handlebar control to make the thing stop and go. In the more detailed cutaway of the hub motor on the right, you can see there’s a six-pole magnet in the center (orange) bolted to the frame and an armature (made from coiled wire, yellow) that rotates around it when the current is switched on. It’s quite a hefty motor even by modern standards; Ogdon mentions “a heavy current at low voltage—for instance, to carry one hundred amperes at ten volts.” So that’s 1000 watts, which is about twice the power of a typical modern bike hub motor.

Most consumers want an e-bike that will accommodate its motor without being too cumbersome and will remain stable in spite of its electronic components. Some consumers want only the most basic of e-bike features, including lights, a cargo rack/basket, and a water bottle holder. Others are focused more heavily on safety features, such as brake type. And still others are concerned with convenience and portability.

In this section, we see the requirements for drivers licences for various vehicles. The the one to take note of here is that if you operate as a “moped” (30-MPH) then you need not only a drivers license, but one with a motorcycle endorsement.  But as a motorized bicycle, (20-MPH) you do not need any drivers license.  You only need to be 16 years old for the “bike”.

Electric bikes (or Pedelecs) have been on the cycling scene for a few years already, however these have evolved from a necessity, which was primarily used for riders with health or fitness issues, into the new breed of serious off road bikes. All of our bikes are the pedal assist (not the throttle type) so some effort is required, the amount is up to you. Whether you’re looking to commute without getting too sweaty, to hitting the downhills with the power of an inbuilt uplift, there is a bike to suit your needs. Why own an e-bike?

Combining speed and style through an innovative pedal-assist motor, advanced electronics, and a sleek design, our Turbo e-bikes represents the full capabilities of the e-bike revolution. They’re capable of achieving top speeds of 45 Km/h while you pedal, so they’ll deliver near superhuman power to any rider.

One last thing to consider is your very local laws. Counties, Parishes, Towns, Cities and even park managers, can also regulate bikes, e-bikes, mopeds, etc at the local level. You may have local laws about mopeds or motor vehicles on the, hiking, bike or multi-use trails for example. Pay particular attention to the exact wording of the signs if any.  “No Motor Vehicles”, does not ban an e-bike IF, your state does not define an e-bike as a motor vehicle.  If a sign says “No Motorized Vehicles”, then your e-bike is a lot more likely to fit that definition and not be allowed on the trail.  Local differences exist. Your multi-use beach path at home may be OK, but cross a city border, and some entirely different rules may be in effect for the paths.

This quickly got pretty complicated didn’t it?  If it really matters to you that you NOT get a ticket, you might just want to gather the information and show it your lawyer.  This could be VERY important if you have gotten your drivers license revoked for some reason, and don’t want a ticket for riding a bicycle to ruin your chances of ever getting it back (we have found drivers with a DUI using an E-bike to get to work. OK in some places, NOT OK in others).  One thing is for sure, if you walk into court the judge is not going to care one bit about the federal consumer product definition of a low speed electric bicycle.  Only the local state motor vehicle code matters.

This is list of the best performing, best value electric bikes for 2017 / 2018. You might want to take a quick look at Wikipedia for a quick overview of the e-bike laws in various states, and in countries other than the USA. Bear in mind, “you can’t lie on the internet” LOL.  The summaries of the laws on the wiki are just your starting point, to get an idea what your states attitude to e-bikes is. Many other sites have edited versions of your local laws,  and many of them will be incomplete. They may not mention things like use of a helmet, needing a registration, etc.

The term “pedelec” (from pedal electric cycle) refers to an e-bike where the pedal-assist electric drive system is limited to a decent but not excessive top speed, and where its motor is relatively low-powered. Pedelecs are legally classed as bicycles rather than low-powered motorcycles or mopeds.

If you have dynamo-powered bicycle lights, you already own an electric-powered bicycle! Consider: as you pump your legs up and down on the pedals, you make the wheels rotate. A small dynamo (generator) mounted on the rear wheel produces a tiny current of electricity that keeps your back safety lamp lit in the dark. Now suppose you could run this process backward. What if you removed the lamp and replaced it with a large battery. The battery would kick out a steady electric current, driving the dynamo in reverse so that it spun around like an electric motor. As the dynamo/motor turned, it would rotate the tire and make the bike go along without any help from your pedaling. Hey presto: an electric bike! It may sound a bit far-fetched, but this is more or less exactly how electric bikes work.

But it’s pretty easy to limit any e-bikes speed, so the e-bike could be slowed down enough to be legal in any state with a 20-MPH limit. In New Mexico though, nothing will make it a “bike” IF the motor is turned on.  With the motor off, nothing prohibited carrying a motor you are not using on a “bike”.  What’s the difference?  You could pedal legaly on the street, then once off the street, motor happily off road.

Pennsylvania is one of the states where non-ebikers who shouldn’t get involved are anyway. Let me explain why they look foolish for trying to control what they don’t even understand. PA vehicle code states 5 “requirements” or criterion which are critical to legal ebikes. the 3rd states in order for it to be a motor vehicle (not a bike) it MUST have an automatic transmission. Even though the code had the term “electric bike” added to it, it still left the “automatic transmission” requirement. Electric motors and bicycles don’t have automatic transmissions, and aren’t really classified in the vehicle code for that reason. Yet on Penndot’s (PA’s DMV) website there is a promiscuous “FACT SHEET” which says electric bikes are all illegal without registration and a DL. I would tell them to stop being so dumb, but I’ve noticed this approach rarely changes the ‘facts’, and I”ll just leave that nest of bees alone. I wonder who wrote that turd. Not one of us, we don’t step on our own rights, do we? I don’t even try to step on others’. But have to be careful where you step. I like laws. But they have to make sense. Ebikes are harmless and can reduce the plague of pollution to heal what I’ve seen become noticeably dirtier (waterways, snow) in my own lifespan, What a shame to even consider it being illegal.
