The majority of folks can’t even recognize an ebike…and if you don’t advertise it, you can ride everywhere…I do…parks…trails…even paths that say no motorized vehicles…but I use courtesy and respect and ride within limits of the path…until I get out of sight…

E-bikes are classed according to the power that their electric motor can deliver and the control system, i.e., when and how the power from the motor is applied. Also the classification of e-bikes is complicated as much of the definition is due to legal reasons of what constitutes a bicycle and what constitutes a moped or motorcycle. As such, the classification of these e-bikes varies greatly across countries and local jurisdictions.

Yet if electric bikes end up replacing human-powered bikes, or if they are used only for exercise or fun, they could well add to pollution because they consume electricity, much of which comes from burning fossil fuels. Only if electric bicycles replace cars will their environmental benefits materialize — and that’s the goal, say bike makers.

All of which raises a question: Can electric bicycles help solve big environmental problems? The industry — which is making a push to expand its sales in the U.S. — says e-bicycles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and traffic congestion, while enabling Americans, two-third of whom are obese or overweight, to become more active. In Europe and China, most electric bicycles are sold to commuters, although it’s not clear whether they are replacing conventional bikes, mopeds, or cars.

E-bike usage worldwide has experienced rapid growth since 1998. In 2016 there were 210 million electric bikes worldwide used daily.[31] It is estimated that there were roughly 120 million e-bikes in China in early 2010, and sales are expanding rapidly in India, the United States of America, Germany, the Netherlands,[2] and Switzerland.[32] A total of 700,000 e-bikes were sold in Europe in 2010, up from 200,000 in 2007 and 500,000 units in 2009.[33]

Around 90% of electric bikes are powered by standard lithium-ion batteries, but there have been further developments in the technology. These developments include lithium-ion polymer batteries, lithium manganese batteries, and lithium batteries.

Free to Roam the Road: According to California state law, any pedal-driven e-bike with a max speed of 20 mph can use any of the state’s bike lanes, bike paths, bike trails or off-street bikeways. (E-bikes are still pretty new, so in many areas, the CA law is the accepted standard in absence of local regulations.) 

You gotta be kidding. What’s the point of having the bike if I have to slow down to a walking pace to avoid some idiotic, brainless move? I’ll just trade it in for a rusty Schwinn and then stop biking altogether because that’s stupid.

Think I care if I push laws boundries? Nope, I will suffer the consequences if they catch me having fun. The law can’t keep up with the times, we can build bikes faster than they can ‘debate’. As soon as I found E-biking, I drive car 1/4 so Gassing every week to a month of what I used too. And I realized cars are not fun to work on, when you have a two wheeled beauty to tinker with.

Add a device to control speed.  One example is a three speed switch.  Some controllers have a plug for it, or there are types that just modify the throttle signal.  If your controller comes equipped with a cycleanalyst plug, then the CA can have its speed limiting function set to 20-MPH.  Lastly, some controllers have a jumper wire that limits potential speed. In most cases this jumper wire, when connected, will result in speed a lot slower than 20-MPH. So that may not be the first choice.  However you get it done, it beats having to comply with the moped laws, particularly if you have no drivers license.

China has experienced an explosive growth of sales of non-assisted e-bikes including scooter type, with annual sales jumping from 56,000 units in 1998 to over 21 million in 2008,[69] and reaching an estimated fleet of 120 million e-bikes in early 2010.[2][70] This boom was triggered by Chinese local governments’ efforts to restrict motorcycles in city centers to avoid traffic disruption and accidents. By late 2009 motorcycles are banned or restricted in over ninety major Chinese cities.[69] Users began replacing traditional bicycles and motorcycles and e-bike became an alternative to commuting by car.[2] Nevertheless, road safety concerns continue as around 2,500 e-bike related deaths were registered in 2007.[70] By late 2009 ten cities had also banned or imposed restrictions on e-bikes on the same grounds as motorcycles. Among these cities were Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Foshan, Changzhou, and Dongguang.[69][70]

Both land management regulators and mountain bike trail access advocates have argued for bans of electric bicycles on outdoor trails that are accessible to mountain bikes, citing potential safety hazards as well as the potential for electric bikes to damage trails. A study conducted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, however, found that the physical impacts of low-powered pedal-assist electric mountain bikes may be similar to traditional mountain bikes.[65]

You Can Go Long(ish): E-bikes are great for commuting and even some long-distance travel. Consider this: a car can travel about 289 miles on a tank of gas (assuming an average of 24.1 miles per gallon for a 2015 model year car). Extracycles go 18-60 miles per charge, and a fully charged Elby e-bike can go 95 miles on gentle terrain. (Some e-bikes even have ranges greater than electric cars like the Nissan Leaf and the BMW i3.)

In the 1890s, electric bicycles were documented within various U.S. patents. For example, on 31 December 1895, Ogden Bolton Jr. was granted U.S. Patent 552,271 for a battery-powered bicycle with “6-pole brush-and-commutator direct current (DC) hub motor mounted in the rear wheel.” There were no gears and the motor could draw up to 100 amperes (A) from a 10-volt battery.[5]
