Electric bikes are a green alternative to driving a vehicle. Studies carried out in several towns and cities show that the average car speed in rush hour traffic can dip as low as 18 to 20 mph. Electric bike speed can be as high as 15 mph. With an electric bike, you can reduce pollution, improve fitness, and still arrive at the same time as your car-bound colleagues.
You must realize that the United States of America is a Union not a nation. The member states are nations and are the source of “state” power for the USA. I do not believe that we need to have uniform laws on such things as riding a bicycle because there is not a significant amount of interstate bicycle traffic.
The term “pedelec” (from pedal electric cycle) refers to an e-bike where the pedal-assist electric drive system is limited to a decent but not excessive top speed, and where its motor is relatively low-powered. Pedelecs are legally classed as bicycles rather than low-powered motorcycles or mopeds.
This was my first VBT bicycling tour and it was fabulous. The bicycling was marvelous and I would recommend an e-bike to other travelers as it allowed me to ride further and with less discomfort than I would have otherwise experienced. I will definitely book another VBT tour in the near future.
It was in 2013 that we first heard about the Rubbee, a device featuring a motorized roller that could be added to any bicycle to turn it into an e-bike. A new-and-improved version followed the next year, and now the even-newer-and-more-improved Rubbee X has just hit Kickstarter.
Benny offers seamless integration of pedal assist making it the perfect e-bike for both first-time owners or experienced cyclists. Smooth acceleration at your fingertips with the large LCD control panel. A Powerful 750-watt motor is powered by either a 264wh/380wh lithium-ion battery. The Benny is designed to be the go-to e-bike for hilly commutes and leisurely rides around town.
As a power electronics engineer I had intended designing and developing a torque assist bike so was surprised to find that a few manufacturers brought them out in Europe recently. I bought a Raleigh Vélo Cité with a 36V 10Ahr lithium battery. I would never use a throttle or cadence type unless I was infirm and I am sure that torque sensing pedelecs will become the norm as prices fall.
Fat e-bikes might seem excessive to some, but we sort of love the concept—especially for riding in deep sand or powder. In addition to being over-the-top and on-trend, the bike has some awesome features, and the fact that Haibike has been on the market with its sporty electronic assist mountain bike line since 2009 (and has been constantly refining it) speaks to the demand for e-bikes. The FatSix is just one of the ultra-niche e-bikes which Haibike offers. (There’s even a dual suspension mountain e-bike in the line.) The bikes are designed and built specially to be e-bikes, not just mountain bikes with motors slapped on. The FatSix features a Bosch motor and an Xduro crankset.
Looks pretty similar to the Texas definitions, but there is one key difference. There is no definition for electric bike. There seems to be no such thing as an electric bike in New Mexico. The closest match is “moped” So it looks like in the State of New Mexico the example e-bike is a moped. Some good news, you can go 30 mph. And you don’t need to register and insure a moped.
Go big or go home with the Yuba Spicy Curry. This is the largest of the e-bikes we’ve amassed in this collection, and it’s for the serious commuter or the person who does all of his or her shopping by bike. Even Costco runs are possible for the Spicy Curry’s powerful electric motor and the massive cargo-ready space on the bike’s sides and back. It can seat your younger kids, with low rails on the side, and features LED lights so you and your passengers stay safe. Of course, this is a bike that needs an electric boost unless you can seriously massive watts, but thankfully, it comes with the Currie Centerdrive 500-watt motor that can make the bike go up to 28 miles per hour.
Do you love vintage motorcycles? Then we have the e-bike for you! The Italjet Ascot is a gorgeously classy model, with retro-chic styling that includes leather handlebar tape, a built-in storage bag, and brown bubble tires. Still not enough glamour for you? A gold chain completes the package. Naturally, it has a leather Brooks Flyer saddle, too. Even the lights look vintage, but nothing about how this bike handles makes it feel old. It can get up to 15 miles per hour with the help of the battery—the rest is all your leg power. If you always wanted a Vespa but couldn’t justify a full-blown scooter, this is one step cooler.

And let’s not forget the economic advantages of owning an e-bike. The annual cost of running a new family car is, on average, about $9,000 per year. Running an electric bike costs around $400 per year. And while filling a gas tank costs around $30, recharging an electric bike battery costs only about 50 cents. A tank of gas may get you further, but not 60 times further!
The BULLS Monster E FS is, well, a monster of sorts. This was the Cadillac of e-bikes. Well engineered, luscious suspensions that make riding on obstacle tracks fun without killing your back. Of course, it might break your wallet, but you get what you pay for. EBR reviewed it here. You may wonder why it has such a modest electric motor at that price, but it all comes together in an elegant way.
Lower the voltage. Depending on the battery, the first block or two of riding might do the trick. If your battery drops voltage fast, you might be a lot slower than 20-MPH for 98% of your ride. I’d call that close enough if that is the case. Or maybe I can just charge my battery to a lower voltage. Maybe if I charge it to 40 volts instead of the normal 42V-44V, I won’t be quite so fast. That could work if my battery still gets me going 23-MPH for too long to fudge it.
Battery: 36V 8AH lithium battery. Power: 250W. The frame folds via a 2 part locking mechanism which ensures the catch safely remains locked when the bike is in use and can be operated with one hand for a smooth folding action.
If you keep reading the NM statutes, you see no exceptions to the traffic laws for mopeds. You get to ride with no registration, but you don’t get to ride any way you please. “Bicycles” have to obey the traffic laws too, by the way. Similar to Texas, lights at night, stop at the stop sign, ride on the right side of the road, obey speed limits, etc.
The power system is easily capable of 28 mph (Class 3) top-end speed yet retains great hill climbing capability. Finally electric bikes can have enough performance to be true car replacement vehicles.
“You honestly feel like you’re floating,” said Marino, who found pedaling easy for his recovering leg. “I felt like I was riding horses again. Instead of trails, I was road biking in and out of traffic.”
Luckily regardless of the laws, I dont hear much about them being enforced anywhere. For example ebikes are completely illiegal in NYC and people still ride them there all the time, and in fact the city has probably the most successful ebike store in the country: nycewheels
They would get me with an Ego drive, (plan to get one) it’s a little noisy. Wonder if dropping gear or reducing motor use, while clown pedaling would get me by. Even if it doesn’t still going to try! All hub motor systems seem good and stealthy, many fully legal, but ego kit so far seems the most bang for buck. At least from what I want out of my kit, what I willing to spend.
