Two years ago, CEO Chris Cocalis of Pivot Cycles — which sells high-end mountain bikes — found that U.S. bike shops weren’t interested in stocking ebikes. Some retailers warned Cocalis that they’d drop the brand if it came out with an electric bike. Some traditionalists had feared excess wear on trails, but research has since shown that not to be the case.

Established bike companies and startups are embracing ebikes to meet demand. About 34 million ebikes were sold worldwide in 2017, according to data from eCycleElectric Consultants. You might want to take a quick look at Wikipedia for a quick overview of the e-bike laws in various states, and in countries other than the USA. Bear in mind, “you can’t lie on the internet” LOL. The summaries of the laws on the wiki are just your starting point, to get an idea what your states attitude to e-bikes is. Many other sites have edited versions of your local laws, and many of them will be incomplete. They may not mention things like use of a helmet, needing a registration, etc.
One last thing to consider is your very local laws. Counties, Parishes, Towns, Cities and even park managers, can also regulate bikes, e-bikes, mopeds, etc at the local level. You may have local laws about mopeds or motor vehicles on the, hiking, bike or multi-use trails for example. Pay particular attention to the exact wording of the signs if any. “No Motor Vehicles”, does not ban an e-bike IF, your state does not define an e-bike as a motor vehicle. If a sign says “No Motorized Vehicles”, then your e-bike is a lot more likely to fit that definition and not be allowed on the trail. Local differences exist. Your multi-use beach path at home may be OK, but cross a city border, and some entirely different rules may be in effect for the paths.

In 2012, two e-bike advocates completed the first 4,000-mile (6,400 km) transcontinental e-bike tour from New York to San Francisco to advocate for e-bikes in major cities across the U.S. Pedego Electric Bikes is the best selling brand in the U.S. Many e-bikes in the United States are standard bicycles converted using a kit. In general, the kits include the motor (the majority of which are hub motors built into the front or rear wheel), a speed controller, throttle (usually twist-grip or thumb throttle), necessary wiring and connectors, and a battery. Several U.S. companies offer conversion kits which also offer advanced lithium battery packs. Major manufacturers also offer complete e-bikes. Connections are made with solid Nickel strips, spot welder to each cell. Each cell and each series is tested before assembly. The BMS will prevent over charging and will balance the cells after a full charge.

I wasn’t sure I would be able to do this ride. But I had no problem at all. I used an e-bike and kept up with the group and had a ball! Everyone on the ride was wonderful and fun to be with.
