In terms of how far you can go, there’s a big difference between a pedelec (pedal-assisted electric bike) and full-time electric bike. If you’re prepared to pedal and only need help on hills, you could get anywhere from 50 to 100 miles on a single charge with the former.
This was my first VBT bicycling tour and it was fabulous. The bicycling was marvelous and I would recommend an e-bike to other travelers as it allowed me to ride further and with less discomfort than I would have otherwise experienced. I will definitely book another VBT tour in the near future.

My State (WV) Laws are similar. Anything with a motor is a Moped (requires registration and insurance and that kills a lot of incentive to use one). I got interested because I was looking at the Organic Transit ELF. Turns out human powered Trikes are non-classified vehicles here, that is they are not defined as a bike -as a bike can only have 2 tandem wheels- while a moped can have 3 but also has a motor which a human powered trike lacks. >shrug< A step-thru urban electric bike that hits a sweet spot between cruiser comfort and city efficiency performance, adjustable angle stem, locking suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes. The bike comes with fenders, a sturdy oversized rack (with standard gauge pannier rods), integrated…... Full-power: These bikes are designed for minimal pedaling over relatively short distances. They have large batteries and powerful hub motors and they tend to be big, sturdy, and heavy. Bikes like this are for people who love cycling but hate pedaling! Since you're using power all the time, the range is limited (typically 16–30km or 10–20 miles). Written by Gaston Daigle. Gaston is an admin and key contributor at the popular Endless Technology Forum Batteries and battery packs, the lifeblood of your electric bicycle Plug and play?... not always that easy and certainly not very simple for most of us.. or is it? A good Lithium battery pack can cost as much, and often even more than the rest of your electric bike kit. Picking the right... Some of the less expensive e-bikes used bulky lead acid batteries, whereas newer models generally used NiMH, NiCd, and/or Li-ion batteries, which offered lighter, denser capacity batteries. Performance varies; however, in general there is an increase in range and speed with the latter battery types. You can also use the search tool and advanced search options on the right rail of any page to find bikes by brand, model or type. We do not deliver on Sundays, but do sometimes deliver on Saturday depending on the carrier that is delivering your order. The best way to determine the date of delivery is to check the status in My Account . Foldability: Not all folding e-bikes are small. Some full-size electric bikes with standard 26-inch or 27.5-inch wheels can be folded to fit into compact spaces. Make sure you’re aware of a folding bike’s weight before you buy it, though. “Foldable” doesn't always mean light. S-Pedelecs: have pedal-assist only, motor power can be greater than 250 watts, can attain a higher speed (e.g., 45 km/h) before motor stops assisting, legally classed as a moped or motorcycle (not a bicycle) The majority of folks can’t even recognize an ebike…and if you don’t advertise it, you can ride everywhere…I do…parks…trails…even paths that say no motorized vehicles…but I use courtesy and respect and ride within limits of the path…until I get out of sight… TerraTrikes make great electric recumbent trikes. Here are a few how to tips for converting the Rover and Rambler models, specifically with internally geared hubs. The TerraTrike Rover and the rambler models both are offered with internally geared hubs. It is possible to convert the trike to external gearing, but you will probably want the help of a bike shop that is familiar with recumbents. For a good bike shop,... If the individual is under 21 years of age, mandatory successful completion of a Basic Rider education course approved by the CHP is required, such as the Basic Rider course available through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. After the initial thrill of going electric, you will quickly realize that e-bikes are all about the battery. Rather than make a small improvement in range, we focused on making a huge leap in battery capacity with 3 exclusive battery specifications to fit your performance needs. The power system is easily capable of 28 mph (Class 3) top-end speed yet retains great hill climbing capability. Finally electric bikes can have enough performance to be true car replacement vehicles. Controllers for brushless motors: E-bikes require high initial torque and therefore models that use brushless motors typically have Hall sensor commutation for speed and angle measurement. An electronic controller provides assistance as a function of the sensor inputs, the vehicle speed and the required force. The controllers generally allow input by means of potentiometer or Hall Effect twist grip (or thumb-operated lever throttle), closed-loop speed control for precise speed regulation, protection logic for over-voltage, over-current and thermal protection. Bikes with a pedal assist function typically have a disc on the crank shaft featuring a ring of magnets coupled with a Hall sensor giving rise to a series of pulses, the frequency of which is proportional to pedaling speed. The controller uses pulse width modulation to regulate the power to the motor. Sometimes support is provided for regenerative braking but infrequent braking and the low mass of bicycles limits recovered energy. An implementation is described in an application note for a 200 W, 24 V Brushless DC (BLDC) motor. If you plan to take your electric bike on a longer trip than usual, we have you covered. Our standard batteries have a range of up to 40 miles. The optional extended-range batteries, available on some models, increase that range to up to 60 miles Built with durable e-bike rated components, the Archer is ready for trails and pot-holes. The oversized axles and adjustable suspension provide a confident feel as you race down the trails or streets. Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Competition 2015 1st and 2nd Place Winners Both Used an Electric Bike Technologies Hub Motor! The Mater Dei Supermileage 3 Team of Mater Dei High School, in Evansville, Ind., took the top spot in the Battery-Electric Prototype category. The team built a vehicle using an electric bike motor from Electric Bike Technologies USA and won the electric plug in class at the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas. They... Potholes, curbs and other urban obstacles are no problem for mountain bikes, which is why many people choose to commute on the things. It was with this in mind that the Billy was created. It's a foldable e-bike that looks like a cross between a fatbike, a full-suspension mountain bike, and a BMX. This lightweight geared hub motor has a 5:1 gear reduction for increased torque. The freewheeling clutch allows the wheel to spin freely when the motor is not powered. The motor is set up with a high-end 9 Speed Shimano Cassette rather than the budget 7 speed freewheel systems. This insures more crisp gear shifts and even compatibility with 10 Speed setups Duke Eco-Marathon Team using an Electric Bike Technologies hub motor for the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon. The E-BikeKit motor provides optimal space saving because it does not require a chain (this makes it great for converting road bicycles to electric bicycles, which is what it is designed to do) but we hope to determine if it provides us with a better overall vehicle efficiency than our outboard motor.
