Lastly look for any other codes that apply to operation of the type of vehicle you have. You may find that helmets are required for those under 18, or whatever.  Remember, if you have decided that your vehicle fits the definition of “bicycle” then ALL laws applying to bicycles apply to you.  So you might need a light after dark.  You might be required to have pedals (some builds have used a bicycle frame to essentially make a scooter). You may or may not be legal to ride on the sidewalk, or the hiking trail.

There’s wisdom in the article though. If you look like a bicycle rider on a bicycle doing bicycle type things, you’ll be treated like a bicyclist. I’ve had 3 throttle bikes and have been riding a pedelec for 2 weeks now, and so far, I liked the throttle. I’m basically a cyclist who likes to keep the pace up going up hills, so I used to ride unassisted a lot of the time, but that’s not really possible with the pedelec. It would be better if it had a 0 setting so you could still use the throttle override, but the only option is to switch the whole thing off. And I agree with Dan, it’s just another thing to go wrong, cost money and add weight. I’ll bet in my case it detracts from the range. Imagine if they told you that you couldn’t switch off cruise control in your car!

Though rear-wheel versions are available, most e-bike conversion kits are for the front wheel. They are easier to fit. However, they do change the balance of the bike, and brakes should also be uprated to cope with the additional weight. We’re not aware of any front hub motors on purpose-built electric bikes.

Also the classification of e-bikes is complicated as much of the definition is due to legal reasons of what constitutes a bicycle and what constitutes a moped or motorcycle. As such, the classification of these e-bikes varies greatly across countries and local jurisdictions.

Maintenance tasks for an e-bike – chain tension adjustments, brake adjustments – are often the same as they are for ordinary bicycles. You can probably handle these tasks yourself. When it comes to battery and motor maintenance, however, we recommend using an expert.

I have now done 2700 miles of leisure cycling with a range of up to 40 Miles. Usually I leave the assist control in ECO mode (50% extra torque)for most of the ride but as I live on top of a hill I usually finish the ride in MED (100% extra torque) or HI (150% extra torque). Think of a this type of pedelec as having a torque motor which applies an extra torque that is a multiplier of the torque you are applying to the chain. Mine is coupled to a Shamano Nexus 7 seven speed hub, and is great for always being in the right gear by being able to change gear when stationary.

For the premium buyer, there’s the Faraday Porteur, the brainchild of Adam Vollmer, a mechanical engineer from Ideo, the famed design firm. First launched as a Kickstarter project last year, Faraday is now taking pre-orders for the Porteur, which is priced at $3,500. It weighs less than 40 pounds, features a leather saddle and bamboo fenders, and its Web site promises that it is “crazy fun.” Even more expensive is the $4,000 eFlowE3 Nitro from Currie, which was designed by a Swiss firm, Flow AG, and promises “fast, powerful and nimble handling.” And if you’ve really got money to burn, there’s a German e-bicycle called the Blacktrail BT-1 that claims a top speed of 65 mph and retails for $80,000. Think of it as the Tesla of electric bikes.

In a parallel hybrid motorized bicycle, such as the aforementioned 1897 invention by Hosea W. However, the only real change in the e-bike laws that I’ve found in WA is the addition of the seat requirement. I’ve had people tell me I just need a seat, and the law’s to prevent sitting on a bar, or standing only.

One last thing to consider is your very local laws. Counties, Parishes, Towns, Cities and even park managers, can also regulate bikes, e-bikes, mopeds, etc at the local level. You may have local laws about mopeds or motor vehicles on the, hiking, bike or multi-use trails for example. Pay particular attention to the exact wording of the signs if any.  “No Motor Vehicles”, does not ban an e-bike IF, your state does not define an e-bike as a motor vehicle.  If a sign says “No Motorized Vehicles”, then your e-bike is a lot more likely to fit that definition and not be allowed on the trail.  Local differences exist. Your multi-use beach path at home may be OK, but cross a city border, and some entirely different rules may be in effect for the paths.

Electric trikes have also been produced that conform to the e-bike legislation. These have the benefit of additional low speed stability and are often favored by people with disabilities. Cargo carrying tricycles are also gaining acceptance, with a small but growing number of couriers using them for package deliveries in city centres.[52][53] Latest designs of these trikes resemble a cross-between a pedal cycle and a small van.[54][55]

The Propella E-Bike is an e-bike we haven’t written much about yet but are currently testing it for CleanTechnica. This is one very sweet e-bike. What makes it really stand out is that it doesn’t feel like an e-bike. Most e-bikes feel like electric bicycles. The Propella feels like a normal bicycle that just happens to have an electric motor. It’s not in your face and it’s a very sleek and light bike. Stay tuned for more on that bike. Oh, and the price? $1,200. Not bad for an entry-level e-bike that will make you feel you are riding on a well designed, well-executed bicycle.

Brush motors are common because they’re durable and rather inexpensive to produce. However, modern brushless motors are lighter, smaller, and more powerful than brush motors, and they can be almost silent. E-bikes with brush motors cost more, but they require no maintenance. As a result, most electric bikes now have a brush motor.

The last e-bike component we’re going to discuss is the throttle. A few e-bikes use levers much like you’d find on some lawn mowers. Some just have a button, but most use motorcycle-style twist grips. These give a positive feel and more precise control.

By 2001 the terms e-bike, power bike, “pedelec”, pedal-assisted, and power-assisted bicycle were commonly used to refer to e-bikes. The terms “electric motorbike” or “e-motorbike” refer to more powerful models that attain up to 80 km/h (50 mph).

I bought an OutlawSS which tops out at 28mph. I tried the “discreet” route as stated above but because of the blood-red color and design of the bike I attracted too much attention. It didn’t matter that I was keeping my (alongside of the road) speed at 15mph, people (probably cycling enthusiasts or just haters) jammed on the brakes to check out wtf I was riding. One passenger (some teenager) even had his smartphone out and was either snapping pictures or getting video. Long story short, the officer that pulled me over said “no” to the bike and advised me to get an off-road sticker from the DNR and I’d be fine on ATV trails. He also said there have been numerous reports of “The guy on the illegal E-bike”. I was polite and got off with a warning. Haters gonna hate I guess.

I wasn’t sure I would be able to do this ride. But I had no problem at all. I used an e-bike and kept up with the group and had a ball! Everyone on the ride was wonderful and fun to be with. If you aren’t sure you might be up for a ride through Spain, think again. Anyone can do it using an e-bike. I can’t wait to do my next trip!! Hum, where shall I go?

The e-bikes in New York should be legalized. This was a very bad idea from somebody to make e-bikes illegal in New York. Making something illegal isn’t to expect that nobody is going to make that thing. Those who made e-bikes illegal in New York should neither expect themselves that nobody is going to ride them there. Riding a gasoline powered motorbike is legal but the e-bikes are illegal in New York, I think this is all ridicilous. New York is one of the world’s biggest cities and there are more vehicles than in London, Stockholm, Warsaw, Berlin or even Gothenburg in Sweden. In all of those cities e-bikes are legal, these cities are named as examples but e-bikes should be legal in New York. They should think more about pollutions and the air quality, this has to be as good as possible in that big cities like New York or even bigger cities. India and China have got real problems with their air quality, especially in the cities where they drive cars and motorbikes a lot. The cargo motorbikes are usual especially in India and those should get replaced by cargo ELECTRIC motorbikes making no pollutions. India and China are the biggest countries in the world and there should be more electric vehicles than gasoline powered vehicles. Today there are batteries that can be charged as fast as refuelling a gasoline powered vehicle, normally 5 minutes. But the batteries get only 50 % of their capacity and charging them that fast all the time will use up them faster than if they will get full charges all the time. Fast charging is also not good for the batteries, it’s better to charge batteries too long. Once I tried charging my mobile phone battery a time that was too long and the battery was longing for a longer time than usually. Too long charges are better than those taking 5 minutes but actually still not the best thing a battery can get. I would recommend to charge the batteries in the time they need mostly and charge them too long sometimes only.
