They’re Entering the Public Domain: There’s a good change that e-bikes are coming soon to a city bikeshare program near you, especially if you live in California. The Golden State’s goal to get 1.5 million zero-emissions vehicles on the road by 2025 has opened up the funding pot, inviting electric bike share providers to apply.

NOTE FOR ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDERS: This map represents how e-bikes are interpreted in each state’s vehicle code, and where e-bikes are allowed to go on the road, bike lanes, bike paths, or other paved or hard-surface bicycle infrastructure. The vehicle code does not apply to electric mountain bike access on motorized and non-motorized trails typically used for hiking, biking, and other singletrack or doubletrack trail experiences. eMTB access on singletrack is different than access to paved and soft surface bike lanes and bike paths; eMTBs are not allowed everywhere traditional mountain bikes are; and on federal, state, county and local trails, eMTB access varies significantly. Both land management regulators and mountain bike trail access advocates have argued for bans of electric bicycles on outdoor trails that are accessible to mountain bikes, citing potential safety hazards as well as the potential for electric bikes to damage trails. A study conducted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, however, found that the physical impacts of low-powered pedal-assist electric mountain bikes may be similar to traditional mountain bikes.[65]

since it uses both the pedal cadence sensor in combination with its own torque sensor; to throttle and control the actual power flowing from one electric bike batteries to be directly supplied to ones electric bike motor; the more one presses down on ones pedal the more electric motor assist one gets as a direct result;

 Looks pretty similar to the Texas definitions, but there is one key difference.  There is no definition for electric bike. There seems to be no such thing as an electric bike in New Mexico. The closest match is “moped” So it looks like in the State of New Mexico the example e-bike is a moped.  Some good news, you can go 30 mph. And you don’t need to register and insure a moped.

Fat e-bikes might seem excessive to some, but we sort of love the concept—especially for riding in deep sand or powder. Specialist off-road electric bikes aren’t legal for road use, so we’re not spending a lot of time on them in this review. However, you may be interested in learning a few facts about these monstrosities. They’re lightweight yet tough with fat, all-terrain tires, advanced brakes, and speeds in excess of 50 mph.

Despite these legal complications, the classification of e-bikes is mainly decided by whether the e-bike’s motor assists the rider using a pedal-assist system or by a power-on-demand one. Definitions of these are as follows:

Range is a key consideration with e-bikes, and is affected by factors such as motor efficiency, battery capacity, efficiency of the driving electronics, aerodynamics, hills and weight of the bike and rider.[38][39] Some manufacturers, such as the Canadian BionX or American E+ (manufactured by Electric Motion Systems), have the option of using regenerative braking, the motor acts as a generator to slow the bike down prior to the brake pads engaging.[40] This is useful for extending the range and the life of brake pads and wheel rims. There are also experiments using fuel cells. e.g. the PHB. Some experiments have also been undertaken with super capacitors to supplement or replace batteries for cars and some SUVS. E-bikes developed in Switzerland in the late 1980s for the Tour de Sol solar vehicle race came with solar charging stations but these were later fixed on roofs and connected so as to feed into the electric mains.[41] The bicycles were then charged from the mains, as is common today. While ebike batteries were produced mainly by bigger companies in past, many small to medium companies have started using innovative new methods for creating more durable batteries. State of the art, custom built automated precision CNC spot welding machines[42] created 18650 battery packs[43] are commonly used among Do-it-yourself ebike makers.

There’s your answer right there. There is already a deterrent to running a stop sign. It’s called civil procedure[ie. being sued]. The only thing legislation does is to make the government a party in a civil matter. The government has no business in the matter.

Rear hub motors are also popular. Some owners suggest they make the back of the bike feel a bit heavy (the battery is often back there, too), but balance is still good. PTVshow knows why I want this bike, and see’s exactly the same worry I fear as soon as I get it. However, I don’t think they will enforce the law on responsible riding (unless of course they haven’t met their quota lol) The way I see it simply put, the line where breaking the law comes in is if a Cop is going to detain you for riding. Which is usually in my case if I do anything that is considered “excessive fun” on my vehical. Even though the Ego is above Law limits for watts, (which is stupid because most motors power peaks at different levels than advertised. They can’t prove it if I drive within speed… Cars can go faster too as long as I follow the rules of the road, they shouldn’t have any reason to hassle me. Why would a Cyclist need Signals and brake lights when you can use hand signals? Law says if it’s faster than 32 Km/h it’s motorized and considered in need of registration, insurance, and license. Which I will probably never bother to carry on the bike, because you shouldn’t need it.

The two most common types of hub motors used in electric bicycles are brushed and brushless. There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. BLDC hub motors are a common modern design with the motor built into the wheel hub itself and the stator fixed solidly to the axle and the magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The bicycle wheel hub is the motor. The power levels of motors used are influenced by available legal categories and are often, but not always limited to under 750 watts.

Around 90% of electric bikes are powered by standard lithium-ion batteries, but there have been further developments in the technology. These developments include lithium-ion polymer batteries, lithium manganese batteries, and lithium cobalt batteries.

I’ve had 3 throttle bikes and have been riding a pedelec for 2 weeks now, and so far, I liked the throttle. I’m basically a cyclist who likes to keep the pace up going up hills, so I used to ride unassisted a lot of the time, but that’s not really possible with the pedelec. It would be better if it had a 0 setting so you could still use the throttle override, but the only option is to switch the whole thing off. And I agree with Dan, it’s just another thing to go wrong, cost money and add weight. I’ll bet in my case it detracts from the range. Imagine if they told you that you couldn’t switch off cruise control in your car!

The environmental effects involved in recharging the batteries can of course be reduced. The small size of the battery pack on an e-bike, relative to the larger pack used in an electric car, makes them very good candidates for charging via solar power or other renewable energy resources. Sanyo capitalized on this benefit when it set up “solar parking lots,” in which e-bike riders can charge their vehicles while parked under photovoltaic panels.[63]

With clear rules on how and where to ride an e-bike, everyone stands to benefit. Local bicycle shops and manufacturers will see increased business and their customers will no longer be confused; people who already ride e-bikes can more easily understand where to ride; and new bicyclists who may be discouraged from riding a traditional bicycle due to limited physical fitness, age, disability or convenience will have new transportation alternatives.

Bicycle or Motorcycle? It Depends: In 37 US states and Canadian Provinces, e-bikes are considered bicycles—not motorized vehicles. In 29 states and provinces, it’s legal to ride e-bikes on bike paths; in 27 states and provinces, however, you’ll need a license to ride.
