Torque sensors and power controls were developed in the late 1990s. For example, Takada Yutky of Japan filed a patent in 1997 for such a device. In 1992 Vector Services Limited offered and sold an e-bike dubbed Zike. The bicycle included NiCd batteries that were built into a frame member and included an 850 g permanent-magnet motor. Despite the Zike, in 1992 hardly any commercial e-bikes were available.
I have now done 2700 miles of leisure cycling with a range of up to 40 Miles. Usually I leave the assist control in ECO mode (50% extra torque)for most of the ride but as I live on top of a hill I usually finish the ride in MED (100% extra torque) or HI (150% extra torque). Think of a this type of pedelec as having a torque motor which applies an extra torque that is a multiplier of the torque you are applying to the chain. Mine is coupled to a Shamano Nexus 7 seven speed hub, and is great for always being in the right gear by being able to change gear when stationary.
Around 90% of electric bikes are powered by standard lithium-ion batteries, but there have been further developments in the technology. These developments include lithium-ion polymer batteries, lithium manganese batteries, and lithium cobalt batteries.
There is some more progress, an electric bicycle is not a “motor vehicle”. That means that signs that say “no motor vehicles” do not prohibit electric bicycles. It would help if they defined electric bicycle someplace. And they finally do.
There’s no question that electric bikes are far better for the environment than petrol-powered car engines. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely perfect. Making and disposing of batteries can be very polluting. Not only that, but an electric bicycle is still using energy that has to come from somewhere. You may think you’re using clean green power, but the electricity you use for getting about might have come from a filthy old, coal-fired power plant or one driven by nuclear energy. (If you’re lucky, of course, it might have come from solar panels or a wind turbine!) Electric bikes are nowhere near as environmentally friendly as ordinary push bikes, but nothing is ever perfect—and, as people often say, “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Electric bikes are certainly a step in the right direction. If everyone used them to get about instead of cars, global warming might be less of a problem, and the world would be a far cleaner and healthier place!

Summarizing the three states we just looked at, the example e-bike is not a “bike” in any of the three states. It’s not a bike in Texas and California because it can motor to 23-MPH. In New Mexico, there simply is no such thing as an electric bicycle.

Riding Position: You also may wish to check out an e-bike’s riding position before investing in it. For short trips, the riding position might not make much difference, but for long journeys, the upright “Dutch” style with pulled-back handlebars is very comfortable – particularly for tall riders. The same goes for mountain bike styles, though bikes are not often designed to actually go off-road.
The €999 ($1,200) Kvaern bike is pedal-assist (meaning you still have to do some work) and uses a 250W motor that’s built into the frame to get up to 15 miles per hour in just a few seconds, according to the company. An integrated battery is good enough for about 30 miles of range, which also pops out for easy charging.
Interestingly, it appears that if I wanted to, I could also ride it as a moped. In the example, 36V makes it go 23-MPH. With 48V, it would go about 28-MPH, and have about one and a half horsepower. As a moped, note that it does not require the bike to have pedals. As a motorized bicycle, it IS required to have fully operable pedals.

A lot of pedal assist bikes have different levels of assistance, for example: low, medium, or high assist. Please note that some e-bikes have 4 or 5 pedal assist settings, but for this example we will just stick with low, medium, and high.
