E-bicycle makers eagerly market themselves as “green.” Dashboards on e-bicycles sold under the Polaris brand and made by a Miami-based company called EVantage include a “carbon footprint savings” function to calculate how many pounds of CO2 are saved by using the bicycle in place of a gasoline-powered car. Evelo, a Boston-based startup, recently launched a 30-day electric bike challenge, asking people to give up their car keys and blog about using their electric bikes. “We don’t want to wean people from bicycles,” says Boris Mordkovich, Evelo’s founder, who previously worked at car-sharing company RelayRides. “We want to wean people from cars.”

While the electric assist will ensure that you get up that hill, an E-bike does not make up for the need to be a practiced and comfortable rider. Operators of E-bikes must be capable of and comfortable with all of the usual aspects of bike operation including mounting/dismounting, starting/stopping, pedaling, shifting gears, balancing and maneuvering in varying traffic and road conditions.

There’s wisdom in the article though. If you look like a bicycle rider on a bicycle doing bicycle type things, you’ll be treated like a bicyclist. So if it’s legal for bicycles nobody in the law will care. Frat boys in SUVs will still throw beer cans at you. Joggers and horse riders will still swear at you. Everybody will hate you if you’re stupid, but at least you won’t get a ticket.

Please ride like a normal bike rider, not like a hooligan. Even if you left your hooligan days behind you 30 years ago, you never know, you could get into an accident. Or, your town might have one cop who just hates bicycle riders.  My town had one that lived for just one thing, ticketing bicycles going faster than 15 mph or passing a car in a school zone. You might not be able to talk yourself out of a ticket, but it sure helps to have some idea if you are really legal or not.

Lithium manganese batteries are used in the latest Nissan Leaf electric car. It’s claimed they generate more power and last longer. The new Leaf has double the range of its predecessor, but we’ve seen these batteries in very few (and very expensive) e-bikes so far.

Yet if electric bikes end up replacing human-powered bikes, or if they are used only for exercise or they could well add to pollution because they consume electricity, much of which comes from burning fossil fuels. Only if electric bicycles replace cars will their environmental benefits materialize — and that’s the goal, say bike makers.

The multi-speed option is equipped with a  Shimano Altus 7-speed derailleur and shifter system. It adds about 2 lbs (1 kg) of weight and requires occasional BASIC maintenance. However, it provides the benefit of incline and long distance riding without the need for electric assist.
