If you’re completely new to ebikes, check out this short video overview and e-book guide that’s free on Amazon if you’ve got Prime. It’s full of pictures and examples to get you acclimated to the space. I’ve also done an in depth video interview about ebikes with my uncle since he has been riding one to work every day for over a year now.

However, the only real change in the e-bike laws that I’ve found in WA is the addition of the seat requirement. I’ve had people tell me I just need a seat, and the law’s to prevent sitting on a bar, or standing only.

Laws governing who can ride electric bikes, and where, vary from state to state. In some places, you can ride cycle paths; in others, you cannot. You may need a license – and even insurance – and there may be age limits.

Baby boomers are an obvious market for electric bicycles. “We’re seeing an aging population, and a growing number of people getting back into cycling,” says Bill Moore, an Internet publisher who recently launched ePEDALER, an electric-assist bicycle retailer. Urbanization will be another driver of electric bike sales, Moore said, as will the obesity crisis, rising health care costs, and the desires of employers to encourage their workers to become more active.

Benny offers seamless integration of pedal assist making it the perfect e-bike for both first-time owners or experienced cyclists.   Smooth acceleration at your fingertips with the large LCD control panel.  A Powerful 750-watt motor is powered by either a 264wh/380wh lithium-ion battery.  The Benny is designed to be the go-to e-bike for hilly commutes and leisurely rides around town.

Brakes: Caliper brakes (the type found on ordinary bicycles) are common on e-bikes, but disk brakes offer better stopping power. In wet conditions, however, initial braking can be slowed as you first clear water from the disk. It’s a minor thing, and you soon get used to it.

Do you love vintage motorcycles? Then we have the e-bike for you! The Italjet Ascot is a gorgeously classy model, with retro-chic styling that includes leather handlebar tape, a built-in storage bag, and brown bubble tires. Still not enough glamour for you? A gold chain completes the package. Naturally, it has a leather Brooks Flyer saddle, too. Even the lights look vintage, but nothing about how this bike handles makes it feel old. It can get up to 15 miles per hour with the help of the battery—the rest is all your leg power. If you always wanted a Vespa but couldn’t justify a full-blown scooter, this is one step cooler.

Torque sensors and power controls were developed in the late 1990s. For example, Takada Yutky of Japan filed a patent in 1997 for such a device. In 1992 Vector Services Limited offered and sold an e-bike dubbed Zike.[9] The bicycle included NiCd batteries that were built into a frame member and included an 850 g permanent-magnet motor. Despite the Zike, in 1992 hardly any commercial e-bikes were available.

“The U.S. electric bicycle market is growing, and we see an opportunity for Yamaha to enter with our long history of power assist bicycle innovation,” said Rob Trester, a business development executive with the company. “Yamaha has been studying the market closely, and we see a strong growth trend.”

Interestingly, it appears that if I wanted to, I could also ride it as a moped. In the example, 36V makes it go 23-MPH.  With 48V, it would go about 28-MPH, and have about one and a half horsepower.  As a moped, note that it does not require the bike to have pedals.  As a motorized bicycle, it IS required to have fully operable pedals.

I’m not kidding. If you are around others going slow, you go slow too as you pass them. When you are not around others moving slow, you can go faster. So what are you doing? A mom and three young kids, and a dog are out on the path going 5 mph, and you fly past them at 35 mph? Is that what you tell me you are doing? You should have your bike taken away from you if that’s what you are doing. And if you have a driver’s license, you should have it taken away as well until you become mature enough to operate such a dangerous vehicle.

Full suspension fat bike with a high quality mid-drive motor from Bosch and their updated 500 watt hour battery pack for extended range. Cool fluorescent paint job that extends all the way through the fork, rear shock housing,……

My State (WV) Laws are similar. Anything with a motor is a Moped (requires registration and insurance and that kills a lot of incentive to use one). I got interested because I was looking at the Organic Transit ELF. Turns out human powered Trikes are non-classified vehicles here, that is they are not defined as a bike -as a bike can only have 2 tandem wheels- while a moped can have 3 but also has a motor which a human powered trike lacks. >shrug< Available for FREE on over 30 VBT vacations, our electric- assisted E-bikes provide extra help whenever you want it—riding uphill, extending your range at the end of a long day, or simply letting you ride together with partners of different abilities. E-bikes work with your own pedaling, silently reading your exertion and augmenting it. How Rotten Tomatoes may radically skewed the Oscars’ Best Picture race There are several other factors behind the shift to weirder, more personal nominees in the category, but the statistics are worth considering Jump up ^ European standard NF EN 15194 for Electrically power assisted cycles Archived 2012-12-24 at the Wayback Machine. section 4.2.6.1 Requirements: The maximum [assisted] speed [is] 25 km/h (…) During a production conformity check, the maximum speed may differ by ± 10% from the above-mentioned determined value. Pressure on South Korea to end the sale and consumption of dog meat, a declining culinary tradition, is growing as activists and athletes stepped up their campaign at the Winter Olympics. Photo: Getty Images After introducing the CrossCurrent S and building the HYPE, we put everything we learned into designing the Ultimate Fat-Tire Commuter E-Bike. Powered by a 750 Watt motor, the RipCurrent S is capable of Class 3 (28 mph) performance with torque-sensing pedal assist included. The new 52 Volt battery platform has over 1,000 Watt-Hours and 70+ miles of real-world range. We incorporated the latest charger technology to extend the lifespan to over 1,500 charge cycles. The RipCurrent S arrives fully-loaded with hydraulic disc, cruise control, air suspension fork, rack, fenders, a 1,050 lumen front headlight and more. The e-JOE Epik’s thumb throttle is not the most intuitive (it's a bit like some powered lawn mowers), but you soon get used to it. The handlebar-mounted display could be easier to understand. These minor negatives aside, owners love the e-JOE Epik's practicality and reliability. It delivers precisely what you expect from a folding electric bicycle. You gotta be kidding. What’s the point of having the bike if I have to slow down to a walking pace to avoid some idiotic, brainless move? I’ll just trade it in for a rusty Schwinn and then stop biking altogether because that’s stupid. A detailed technical description of GeoOrbital's innovative, easy-to-fit front-wheel replacement. You must realize that the United States of America is a Union not a nation. The member states are nations and are the source of “state” power for the USA. I do not believe that we need to have uniform laws on such things as riding a bicycle because there is not a significant amount of interstate bicycle traffic.
